U-joints 200

What noises (if any) do u-joints make when they are going out?

I have an intermittent 'shriek' coming from somewhere in the drivetrain when accelerating in 1st gear. Also a vibration between approx. 10-15mph in same gear, strong enough to visibly vibrate the head rests. Center support, carrier bearing, etc. have all been replaced within the last couple of years.

Time for new u-ies?

I had somewhat of a similar problem. I would get this nasty popping noise when decelerating, either in neutral or in gear around 15-20 mph. I also drove around the parking lot in first gear and held the engine @ 1500RPM and it would produce a very pronouced shudder through the body, worse than you describe.

We swapped out the driveshafts, because I had one laying around. After removing the old driveshaft we found that the rearmost u-joint had about 1/16-1/8" of play, this is just visual inspection so I am guessing on that sloppiness.

But that was the only problem that i could find with the driveshaft in its entirity.

I agree with the other posters. If one u-joint is bad, it is best to replace them all. It is best to remove the shaft to inspect I think. We greased the driveshaft joints that were in there before replacing the driveshaft, but that joint was so far gone it did not help.

    hope this helps
    take care

Volvo U-joints usually sieze rather than get loose and make clunking/clamking noises. Symptoms are as you describe. Remove the drive shaft and you will probably find 1 or more joints siezed or binding in 1 direction. Replace all 3 if you find a bad one, and dont forget to mark the front and rear halves , and the flanges and slip yoke, so it all goes back together the same.

Definitely a drivetrain vibration. If they are shrieking, they must be getting awfully hot. You can test them by hand if you twist them and also pull them along the axis of the shaft. If they pop in and out of position they have to go pronto.
