Is my heater blower motor resistor dying ??? 700 1987

I have an '87 760GLE with automatic climate control system. Recently the blower motor is acting strangly, meaning on in the morning and off in the hot Texas
afternoon time (100 deg. F now). Since mainly my wife is driving the car with
our daughter, I have to replace the motor asap. I replaced it yesterday morning,
and sadly found out the problem is still there. Then I tried to examine the blower motor resistor. This is what I found: when I turned the knob to either one seeting, the blower is on but very small amount of air is coming out of the vent as if blower fan is not on. If I disconnect the electrical connector while the knob is at "high fan", then everything suddenly worked what it is supposed to be. I then connect the connector, turn the key off and assume the problem is in the connector. But when I come back 3 hours after, everything is not working again until I played with that same resistor. I have tried this for whole day yesterday after I put the new blower motor in and whole morning today. Is the
blower motor resistor getting bad or the connector? How can I check these
devices? Is there anything I am missing here? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Is my heater blower motor resistor dying ??? 700 1987

Hi, I have an 87 760 gle too. I'm not sure if this is applicable to your problem but when I first got my car years ago the fan was intermittent. After running on High speed for a while it would quit. I traced it to a flaky fan relay. This relay is on the air unit behing the glovebox (of course).

I have a question for you too, my fan, while still working is very noisy. How much trouble did you have replacing yours? Did you have to remove and replace the computer? Disconnect the computer?

if you want, you can write to rollei35guy@yahoo.com.

    Thanks and good luck.

Check the relay mounted to your blower housing.

      Dear O. E.:

This is what I have done so far while the setting is at "auto" with low wind:
      (1) jiggle the relay -> no change to the motor speed
      (2) remove the relay -> nothing happened
      (3) reconnect the relay -> nothing
      (4) relay clicked when seeting changed from "panel/floor" to "defrost",
no click heard from any other setting to the others.

I also found out that my fuse#16 melted, but not blown. I think there is a post
in this regard recently. I am looking closely on that thread as well. Is that melted fuse #16 my problem here too?

How can I check the replay for voltage? Is it necessary? The numbers/indicators on the legs of the replay are:15, 87, D-/61 and 85.

      Thanks.

      kjjyip

"(4) relay clicked when seeting changed from "panel/floor" to "defrost",

Defrost will actually turn on your AC unit believe it or not, even if it is in the dead of winter and the heat is on full.

FYI: this is because a/c will dehumidify the air, which is what you want to clear a whndscreen, DRY air, either hot or warm.

Anyway. I believe since your relay clicked in the defrost setting but no other setting, you either have no power on the line side of fuse 16 or it could be in your climate control mechanism.

As far as the relay testing goes without ripping mine out and looking at it, I don't know what to tell you. I haven't got a spare to look at. Basically, you want to be sure the contacts make when power is applied to the coil. You are going to have to remove the cover to verify what terminals are what.

Sorry I can't be more helpful at the moment. Maybe a new post with the question asked will get a response from someone with more relay knowlege then I have this late at night. Sorry.

I hope it is just the relay, because that is an easy fix.

        Good luck
