Dawes device boost controler. 700

Does the Dawes device have you set your wastegate at stock pressure?

I am setting up a Grainger valve (home made Dawes device boost controler) and am wondering how the heck I am going to dial it in, without spiking above my already high 12 psi boost level.

Just curious how the dawes device is dialed in.

I suspect I will have to lower the wastegate boost setting before proceeding with the install.

Thanks for any info.

It doesn't matter what the wastegate is set to. You are overriding it with the G-valve, wastegate delay valve, dawes device... whatever you want to call it. When the boost pressure rises to lift the ball off the seat by overcoming the spring pressure, the wastegate will operate and bypass the turbo. The wastegate is not modulated by the rising boost. You will have to preset the pressure using a calibrated boost gauge, a pressure source and the valve. I used some tubing, a bike tire schrader valve, a bike pump and my boost gague. It's a simple adjustment. Don't forget the .020" hole on the wastegate side, it's the pressure relief port for the wastegate. I've got two, one for the 740, one for the V70.

That's what I thought at first, but then another thought came to mind. Say he has the rod adjusted so that he is making 14 psi of boost without the G-valve.
Then if you go and install a G-valve set at 10 or 12 psi, you are not going to be getting the full benefit of the G-valve. With the G-valve set right at 14, then you might not have a problem, but why take the chance? It would be safer to have the wastegate set at a lower boost, say 8 psi, so then you will be sure to get the maximum effectiveness out of the G-valve.

If the wastegate (without G-valve) and the G-valve were both set around the same setting, then perhaps that is a thing that would contribute to the boost spiking that some people complain about. I have no spiking. It seems to me that if the wastegate were set to a lower setting than the G-valve, that the wastegate would act more rapidly when the boost signal gets through the Gvalve.

Well, at the very least, the wastegate setting should probably at a lower boost level than the G-valve will be set at. Stock setting of the actuator rod would probably be good.

If you have a bike pump with an accurate gauge, you can pump air into the G valve and see what pressure it holds. That is how I set mine, and when I put it in the car, the car made exactly the amount of boost that I set it for.

Otherwise, just set the G valve for a low pressure, and turn it up as you drive and see how much boost you are making.
