Front end noise - is it the new bushes? 120-130 1968

I replaced all the front bushes with softish SuperePro poly bushes (not hard racing ones). The right front makes no noise, but the left one groans when you bounce it (or drive it). I did give them a slathering of rubber grease when I installed them.

I also replaced the springs and shocks (Konis) at the same time, so it is just possible it is one of those.

Can you overtighten the bushes to make them groan? Or leave them too loose?

I'll recheck all the torque settings at the weekend, and also remove the shock to eliminate that.

Any other suggestions?

JohnH

    Could be a ball joint.

I hadn't thought of that one. Now you mention it, that side looks like it has a lot more negative camber than the other - which might be a ball joint gone south. I'll give it a good shake, plus make one of those templates that I've seen in the manual to check them. Do you know if a 140 ball joint will fit?

140 ball joint is completely different. Remember that if you jack the car up and allow the suspension to hang it will disguise wear. Jack under a wishbone with a trolley jack to check.

          Pete,

Thanks for that. Is just a good shake enough to detect wear, or should I make one of the template gadgets?

And it's a shame about 140 ball joints. I've got 2 very good 140 parts cars, and only one Amazon parts car, and it is currently complete. I might just buy a new joint after all.

I normally check them by feel. It can be useful to take off the steering rods and turn each wheel individually. They can go very stiff once they become corroded/worn out. Makes it easier to pinpont the fault.

Did you tighten the bolts for the bushes with the car sitting on the ground, and preferably someone behind the steering wheel. If you tighten them with the suspension hanging they can groan.

      Pete,

I did it last year one one of my flying visits home from London, so I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure I did it while everything was on stands. I'll slacken them all off on the ground and retighten them. Should that do the trick, or might I have somehow damaged them by tightening them off the ground?
