rear suspension question 200 1982

I've been rolling around under the car to try to find a clunk in the front suspension with no luck. However, when I set the car back down, I rocked it back and forth while in gear and noticed that the rear differential would deflect up and down over an inch at the driveshaft end. I'm wondering if this is normal or are my torque rod bushings shot? This is an 82 245 glt.

Also would like to thank all who have answered my recent flurry of questions, I hope to be able to repay the favor when my learning curve flattens out a bit.

Bob

The torque rods are very common to go out. Do you get a clunk when you go into reverse or drive from a stop?

You should be able to see bad torque rod bushings with just a flashlight.
    Easy to change these bushings.

Could also be the trailing arm to axle bushing. A little more difficult to change.

Yes, that's when I hear the clunk, always sounded like it was coming from the front end though.

Feel kinda stupid needing someone to tell me to crawl under there and look at the bushings with a flashlight. I just did. They're shot alright. Thanks for the quick response!

That's good that you've found your problem. Now you have 2 options. You can put in another set of rubber bushings, or you can put in the polyurethane ones. Are you familiar with that part? Both IPD and FCPGroton sell them, and maybe others as well.

The ride will be a little stiffer, but you get a little more control. They are also easier to install (you don't need a press to install them), and they last longer. They do cost more.

The poly units are available for both types of torque rods: The ones with the cylindrical ends, or the ones with the hourglass shaped ends. You probably have the cylindrical ones.

Oh, did you check your trailing arm bushings as well?

          Hi all

The torque rods with the cylindrical ends weren't fitted to cars until 84. if you are going to replace the torque rod bushes with polyurethane ones it is easier to fit the cylindrical style bushes than the hourglass shaped I suggest getting the 84 and later torque rod and fitting them you don't need a press to fit these bushes

In the US, the hourglass shaped ends were used until about 81. After that, they are all cylindrical.

That sounds like a nice stable full of cars you've got!
