1991 944 Turbo Sedan 900

We have had three Volvo's and have been well pleased with their dependability
up til now.For about the 1.5 months we have had a continuing problem with Our
91 944 turbo. Intially my wife said that the car was sluggish and did not
drive very well. We have a very good shop (P&A Smith Auto Repair) that seems
to be able to correct all of our problems. We generally follow the guidelines that Paul recommends and do the regular maintenace on the car. Anyway the shop
put the computer on the car and said the readings did not indicate any major
symptom. So we drive it for about 2 weeks and the CHECK ENGINE light comes on.
So we take it back to the shop, they do their testing, reset the computer and off
we go. When I drove the car it would stutter step a few minutes then I would step on the gas and it would be okay. But once I stopped the car and let it sit
about 15 minutes. I would get back into the car and start it up and it would
go about 100 ft and then cut-off. I would then start the car and it would move
about 30-40 feet then cut-off again. However this time it required me to wait
15-20 minutes to start the car. I took it back to the shop and of course they
could not duplicate the problem. But they did put a new fuel regulator filter
on the car.I picked the car up and drove it about half a day. The problem
flared up again. It stayed with them about a week and they replaced the starter
coil.I picked the car up yesterday and it worked okay and no starting problems.
Today, I drove it to work and did not have problem until I went out to eat.
It cut off and I was able to restart it soon after. But when I left the
place it cut off and got progressively worse. I finally called a wrecker
service and they dropped it off at the repair shop. I tried to start it right
before I left the repair shop. Guess what the @#$%^& thing started. I am a novice about repair matters so any opinion's would be appreciated.

Fuel pump relay? That's ALWAYS suspect in start/no-start conditions like that. If it's original, consider having them replace it. If it starts cutting in and out, it can cause stuttering and stalling, plus random no-start conditions.

That's the first thing I check when I get into a Volvo and it doesn't start. Frequently, it's the reason.

eh eh. FI and RF suppression relay. followed by ignition amplifier, in order of prob. 900

      Classic B230FT problems.

Poor driveability is also generally due to bad hose from amm to turbo...'91 OEM is about time to replace that hose...prob around $100 which is better than the 87-89 Garrett turbo B230FT engines...figure around $200 list for those!

Look at FCPGroton.com and maybe beat the dealer prices since you don't use the dealer anyway.

Looks like you need to find a better service outlet.
