Transfering m46 j-type overdrive unit to a m41 box 120-130

Does anyone have experience with transfering m46 j-type overdrive unit to a m41 box, alternatively, can the m46 overdrive unit be transferred to a m40 gearbox. Hopefully such transfer would obviate the adaptor of the m46 bellhousing to fit the b20 engine.

    Transfering m46 j-type overdrive unit to a m41 box 120-130

There are various incarnations of M46. As far as I know an early J type on an M46 was the same as that fitted to late M41 boxes. If you are starting with an M41 with a D type overdrive you can't fit any J type overdrive onto it because the splines on the gearbox mainshaft onto which the planetary gear slides is coarse on a D type and bigger in diameter and finer on a J type overdrive.

You can't mate an overdrive onto an M40 without fitting it with the longer mainshaft and the housing that holds the overdive onto the back of the gearbox.

The most obvious solution is to cut the M40 bell housing and the M46 bell housing and weld the two together. Bram Smits has details on his website.
