Funky idle 900 1994

Hey all,
I have a wierd idle problem that happens from time to time. When my car is cold it idles fine just around 500rpm, when warm for the most part the idle stays the same. I've noticed since I bought my 940T that occasionally I'll get a dip in the idle when I'm sitting at a stop light or at a dead stop. This happens regardless of whether I'm in drive or park. Yesterday I cleaned out my throttle body (it wasn't that dirty) and intake hoses. I didn't clean out the intercooler. They weren't severly crudded up they just had some slight oil residue. I also removed my idle air valve and cleaned that out as well. I took this time to also check out my ground connections as they sometimes crud up and cause wierd problems, and I notice that the idle dipped when the radiator fan cycled on. They also didn't look bad but I cleaned them all up regardless. Then I pulled out my handy dandy digital volt/ohm meter and checked for voltage drop by attaching my positive lead to the battery then touching the various grounding points. They had indentical voltages with the engine off 12.96 and on 14.25. Anyone have any insight to this, my car runs fine just that damn idle drop pisses me off. Thanks and sorry for the long post.
Mike

The idle control valve is going bad, the electrical part is OK, but the mechanical inside is not moving quick for the load changes, in other words time to replace it.

I think my car does this also. Let me make sure we're talking about the same thing. When the fan comes on, the idle dips low momentarily and then rises almost back to normal?

I just attributed this to the additional current draw of the fan.

Your description is correct. I'm concerned becuase it seems to happen a lot on my car.

Well I haven't had mine for that long so I don't know if it has always done it or if something's wrong but it doesn't seem to affect anything. On the other hand, my Nissan truck adjusts the idle when additional drain is placed on the engine, i.e. A/C comes on.

In summary, I don't know if its normal but the car runs fine. I guess I'll have to keep up with this post to see if I've got something wrong with mine too.

I own a 91 940t I could have sworn the correct idle when hot was suppose to be like 750-800 something like that but not 500 that seems really low!! As far as the check engine like it depends on the code that stored as to rather or not the light will come on!! Good luck!!

i suspect the idle contol valve. mine 960 does the same thing, your car should through some code ( 2-3-2 i guess).

I'll look into getting a spare AIC valve perhaps mine is heading south. But I'm not getting a check engine light, am I correct to assume that the check engine light will come on if codes are stored?

The current draw from the fan can cause idle to decline temporarily. The IAC system should compensate. Test the IAC to make sure it's working (see FAQ: you pinch the hose).
