Rattle and Shifter loose...Can't remove shifter console panel!! 700

I've been having a problem with a rattle since I got the car, and the shifter is a tad loose. I tried to get the shifter console black panel off, but it won't budge. I loostened the 2 screws under the plate beneath the Ebrake handle, but I can't get the #@%$* thing off if my very life depends on it. Any ideas? I've done everything I dare to do, I don't want to break it. I've been told the rattle/loose shifter problem could be something loose underneath like a quarter that fell through, screws needing tightened, or something to do with the Shifter Linkage. I can't fix it unless I get that panel off...help please

Chances are that you do not need to remove the console panel. Our 90 760 had a very loose gear shifter. This was fixed with new shift link bushings. They (4) were about $2.50 each, and were replaced from underneath the car.

How difficult are these to replace? Also I was rather vague on the rattle...it starts around 70MPH/2800RPM, and gets worse as the speed/RPM's go up. If I hold the shifter, it stops.

The rattle I had was not dependant on speed, engine turnover, or anything. The shifter was just loose and was rattely to the touch. What you describe sounds more like motor/transmission mounts.

on my 90 740, you have to remove those two screws in addition to a little metal clip.

the metal clip is found when you remove your ashtray and reveal the fuse box. it should be fairly obvious where the clip is. you just have to pull it off (it's very very tight so i highly recommend a screwdriver to pry it loose, and then pull it straight off with pliers)

I forgot to mention I did have the clip off. The problem is at the far rear of the panel, up above the Ebrake handle...there is something holding it in place there and that is what absolutely will not budge. I've tried to pry it out with a screwdriver but everytime I almost had it, the thing snapped off the screwdriver and back into place.
