Auto Overdrive Malfunction 200 1990

I have a 90 240 wagon with 199k miles on it. Recently it began shifting in and out of overdrive (though the dash light never came on) after about 15 minutes of driving. Now it won't even get into overdrive from start up. The fluid level is fine. I tried to change the fluid and filter however, but could not get the drain hose bolt to budge. Does anyone have any suggestions on what this could be? Should I also check the OD relay?

    Larry,

    It could be the OD relay, but I think the light comes on if the relay is bad. Are you sure the light bulb is OK? No harm in reflowing the solder joints in the relay anyway, and it may fix the problem.

    Other posibilities are wiring associated with the relay, switch and OD solenoid; the OD solenoid itself; or the kickdown cable.
    Do upshifts come late? If so, the kickdown cable is suspect. Pull on the cable where it attaches to the throttle pulley, then let go. It should snap back quickly.

    Could be something gone bad in the tranny, too - they're quite durable, but everything wears out eventually.
