oil consumption 900 1994

Hey all,
I've noticed that my brick is using about a quart of oil every thousand miles or so. I've been running mobil 1 10w40 for the last two oil changes. When I got it from the dealer it had conventional 10w 40 in it, for about 2 weeks so I couldn't tell any difference in consumption. Is this normal? I'm not blowing smoke from the rear, I had a friend follow me to check. I'm not leaking the engine bay is superclean. The hoses from and two the intercooler have some slight oil residue but I thought that all the turbo models have this. Anyone have insight to whats up? BTW I have approx 68 thousand miles on it. Thanks for the help.

Michael.

Mike-
It is not abnormal to notice some oil consumption after changing to synthetic oil. The synthetic will clean out any residue left by the non-synthetic. This will usually lessen after the engine gets clean.
I have yet to see any Mobil 1 10W-40--sure it isn't 10W-30?

your right it is 10w 30 that was a typo on my part sorry! I hope that the consumption will lessen as this synthetic stuff isn't cheap.

We have four turbo 700 series cars. Oil use is as high a one quart every 600 miles depending on operating load. The only one of the four cars which does not use measureable quantities of oil is the wife's 86 745T. The engine in that car had a top quality overhaul including bored cylinders and new pistons and rings over 60,000 miles ago. A top quality machine shop did the work and I assembled the engine.

My turbo does the same. I found the leak going from turbo air being pushed out to other side of engine.

You found a leak? Could you please discribe this more. I'll take a closer look at my turbo area but when I looked this weekend I didn't seem to be leaking at all. thanks
Mike

Mike:

Oil consumption in a healthy b230ft can range from 1qt/1000 miles to none and be considered nomal. If you motor starts using noticably more oil I would start to worry. For right now, drive and enjoy.

In my experience, oil consumption can be higher than the 1 quart per 1000 miles. Although not desireable, it appears to be normal for some turbo engines to use their of oil.
