Fog lights? sorry... fog _light_ 900 1995

hi folks.

so i've been crawling all over my new '95 940 wagon.

i thought i had a rear fog lamp out, so i pulled the top bulb on the right side to investigate... bulb looked good, but now i had a reverse light out! as it turns out, the top bulb on the right of my car is the backup. there's no socket or bulb in the topmost position, which is the fog lamp on the left side. there *is* a grey wire hanging there, which is wired to the fogs on the other side, but it doesn't look like the light assembly will even accept a bulb if i had a socket for it.

is this the standard configuration? i had a couple of late '80s 700 bricks with rear fogs, but i remember them being on both sides.

what's going on here?

/chris

..."My 1991 940 has only one rear fog light although I have sockets on the other side as well but no corresponding hole for the bulbs on the lamp panel"

On my 93 sedan, the hole is covered by a cap which can be pop off. Put a lamp in the socket and insert it in the now available hole
et voila, dual fog light

You're right; there's not supposed to be a bulb.

I'm glad the Europeans had it figured out. It's easy to distinguish not only that the brakes aren't on, but also which side of the car you're looking at--especially if that's all you can see.

The American sleds still have dual rear fogs, if I'm not mistaken. That allows the driver to turn them both on all the time, which is a great addition to 20" rims and a gigantic sound system. That's usually how i see them displayed. After all, the more lights you have (at least here), the cooler you are!

I like to turn them both on when jerks get too close! It's fun to watch them back off.

Hi,

I think the rationale for having only one rear fog light is, if I am not wrong, to differentiate it with brake lights. As you may already know the fog light is relatively brighter than the rear tail lights but almost same brightness as the brake lights. To avoid confusion on other drivers during a bad weather that you have applied brake (when your rear fog light is ON) all newer cars comes with only one sided rear fog light. My 1991 940 has only one rear fog light although I have sockets on the other side as well but no corresponding hole for the bulbs on the lamp panel. I thought of adding a bulb on the side that it does not have, but having considered the rationale above I decided not to and I think that is being vry considered and prudent.

Hello, Velan. I can't disagree with the rationale. I still say, with one fog light it looks like one of the brake lights are burned out. A few days ago during a rain, I saw late model SUV (couldn't tell you what kind) with two rear fog lights, or the driver was riding the brakes. It got my attention, though! I like what cancerman did with his fog lights.

I prefer to have two, as one is very likely to get me pulled over. The local cops are plentiful, and have nothing better to do. I've got them wired so they stay on if the fog light switch is on, and double as brake lights when they are off.

I know how it works but I don't know what's going on. It took me a while to figure this out. Yes the '95 945 has only one fog light socket on the drivers side rear. My '95-945 has daytime running lights, normal beams in the front and tail lights in the back, plus interior dash lights on, and the high beams and fog light only function if the light stitch is in the on position.

I think they changed it to just one rear fog light, unlike older cars.
