yet another drum-pulling question 120-130

I'm hoping for advice on exactly what type of puller is needed for the rear drums of a '65 122.

My brakes are getting scary (need to pump up to work) so its time to refurb, whether I'm ready or not. I've done a full bleed twice and it hasn't helped the soft pedal. Pump it and it holds but without it almost goes to the floor.

Anyone have suggestions of where to source the correct puller or any way to rig one up?

Thanks,

Mario E.

    Hey Mario-
When you're ready to do it let me know, I have a real Volvo type puller you can use.

    thanks, adjustment helped 120-130

Forgot that the technology of the era encouraged hands-on with brakes as well. I adjusted the rear drums per BB advice and its helped pedal travel. Not spooky anymore.

But couln't adjust the passenger rear to "drag" so the hubs still need to come off. I've found sources for the heavy-duty puller, I'll try to rent one first.

    Thanks to the BB again!

Unless you are getting scraping noises out of the rear brakes or fluid is dripping out then you might just need to adjust them instead of replace them. Try pulling the parking brake 1/2 way on and see if that helps the pedal travel. Depending on the year it could have several types of adjusters - my 544 has a little slot through which you can turn a toothed wheel with a screwdriver (invariably the wrong direction on the first try). Yours might have this or a little square head at the bottom of the back plate.

If you do need to pull the drum you'll need a really heavy duty stud puller. Some auto parts stores have these available for rent, or they are for sale new for around $120. I got lucky and got one on eBay (ex-military) for about $60.

Any sturdy puller which pulls from the lug bolts and presses in on the axle stub should work. I have one with adjustable arms. I believe they sell a couple of different ones in the JC Whitney catalog.

Shayne or Cameron (IPD) can possibly either loan/rent you one or tell you where
    to find one.

The one I made looks like a hat made of 3/8" steel.
Lug bolt holes in the brim and the crown shallow enough that it presses
on the end of the axle when you put it over the lug bolts. Tighten
down the nuts and it pushes the axle through the hub.

There are other kinds but you gotta pull from the lug bolts. If you try
to grab the edge of the drum you'll mess it up.
