Wiper swapout from 122S 120-130

Hello all,

Just wanted to know, before I spend three hours on my back this weekend, if anyone has ever put the machanical 122 wiper assembly in a P1800. The wiper assembly is from a 1964 122s and looks like it will fit in the 1966 P1800, but I would really like to know what I am about to get into. I don't mind some minor re-engineering but I don't want to pull out the blow torch.

Thanks in advance....

Oliver

Oliver,
I just saw this on Ebay. Three day left and no bids yet.

Thanks for the heads up. That may be the easiest way to go....

Wiper swapout from 122S 120-130

Oliver;

If you get it as a replacement, great...may I suggest carefully checking for slop or an enlarged "D" hole on the pulleys. If there's any present, you will want to square it away before installing the mech.

Cheers

I'M NOT YELLING HERE BUT... 120-130

The wiper assembly from an 1800 is partialy cable accuated. If the assemblies look the same (accuated by flat metal rods-four mounting points under dash) then they are the same. If you use the (early) 122 style there may be clearance probs.
I do not know if the early 1800's had the flat-metal-bar style assemblies (the '64 1800 I was under recently had the cable style assembly-two mounting points)or if that kind would even fit.
Anyone else?

Thanks Shayne,

The 1800 does have the cable type system which has given me fits. The machanical system from the 64 122S looks much more reliable and does appear at first glance to have the same four mounting points. I will be doing the swap out this weekend so I will report back if it fit or not....

I'M NOT YELLING Either, BUT... 120-130

Oliver;

...I was just wondering why you feel you must change the whole mechanism...in the first place, a weekend may not be enough time(!), given that you need to rip a lot of the dash apart for access, and you might really just need to tighten up the double nuts at the end of the cables to get rid of the slop in the works (if that's your concern)...I think I would prefer a root-canal to a wiper swap in an 1800...

I just compared 1800 (cable), with 122 (gear) mechanisms...it looks like it may work (but there is no place to screw the lower two bolts into...you may need to bend or even cut away this part of the bracket to fit it).

Please let us know how you make out.

Cheers

Hi Ron and Oliver 120-130

That was my concern-there would be no lower mounting points in the 1800 and that those extra brackets from the gear style would interfere with something.
Also, would those gear style moving arms make radio installation even more difficult?
I've been changing all of my 122's to the cable style to eliminate the standard floppy wiper arms---so far, so good. After years of trying to fix the gear style ones, I'm so happy to have a solution.

OK Shayne 120-130

Shayne,

Are you saying that you preffer the cable system over the machanical???

The problem I am having is with the wiper post on the passenger side that goes through the cowl. The bolt that holds the cable pulley stripped and the cable pulley wobbles real bad. This caused the the wiper arm too bend, and stripped the cable end also. I took off the passenger side arm assembly so only the driver side works.

Since I had the 122 assembly just laying around......(See what trouble thinking gets you into.)

If you recommend to just replace the passenger side arm and post, then I will go that route and save myself the frustration.

Anyone have a pasenger side arm and post to trade for a complete 122S wiper assembly???

Oliver

Yeah, but... 120-130

I don't have any long term experience with the cable style assemblies. For the last ten years I have lived with wiper arms that slap the trim on both sides. I've taken these gear style assemblies apart to their smallest pieces, reassembled using the best(looking)pieces, and have never found a solution.
My friends with '68 122's never seemed to have a problem, so I looked up under there and lo, and behold- what in the heck is that?
Cable accuated assemblies seemed to be the way to go- it certainly solved my 10+ year problem. Again, I've only had it in the car for a little more than one blissful year. It sounds like, from your experience, these can go bad too.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for me, and I'll be on the lookout for a cable system for you. I got mine off E-bay but they come out of (all?) 1800's and '68 and later 122's
Driver side wiper only? Sounds like a good solution for now.
Best,
Shayne

Yeah, but... 120-130

Shayne;

I thought I recalled seeing both in 122s! Of course, it may have been due to a later swap, but it does prove the bracket differences between 1800 and 122 can be worked out.

I dont actually think either system has any particular inherent weaknesses other than wear induced slop after they've made about a million or so
wipes...and can you blame them at that point? I have noticed that the double "D" shaped shaft of the cable type going into the pulley overpowers the matching hole in the pulley and develops a fair amount of slop...this is in-fact the situation on my '66 1800...this does seem to be a weak link (but may just be were they gave way when the wipers were turned on with ice-locked blades at some point). I plan to have the shaft (carefully) TIG welded onto the pulley (instead of replacing the whole mechanism) whenever I get to
removing the assembly...and as you know, I'll be putting that off for as long as I can!!!...in fact, that is one reason I came up with the intermittent wiper controls for the different vehicles...I figure I want to do whatever I can to further minimize the rate at which the wiper system mechanics wear.

Cheers,
