Coolant probelms 900

Hi all,

I've read a few posts just recently about problems with a particular type of coolant. I currently use a brand called Tectaloy here in Oz which I was told was pretty good. I'm wondering what problems have people on this list experienced using various brands of coolant? Corroded heads? Overheating? What else? Is the Volvo coolant the best, as this is what I plan to use next month when I changed the coolant? Are there any particular brands to stay away from besides the really cheap "home-brand" type stuff?
I think it would be really interesting to compile a list of problems or general experiences people have had with various coolants.

Let me know your thoughts.

    Hi Brad,

I've used Tectaloy without apparent problems in my 93 940 turbo. However with heed to the great advice generously given by Steve Ringlee and the other contributors to Brickboard I have continuously searched for the best product readily available on the Australian market.

The product I have come across which seems to best meet our needs is 'Nulon Long Life Anti-Freeze, Anti-Boil'. It is stated to last 4yrs or 250000kms.

It states on the packaging that it meets and exceeds Volvo UK standards. It is rare to see Volvo get a mention on any Aussie manufacturer's packaging!

It comes as a concentrate in a 5 litre container, therefore when mixed 50:50 with demineralised water only one container is required. Available at K.Mart for $29. Demineralised water $2.50 for 4 litres at Coles.

    Take care,
    John H from DOWNUNDER

      Hi,

to be sure, I use the tectalloy coolant that meets the GM spec (marked for Commodore) which is tighter than the AS.

Never buy the stuff that is merely green coloured water (very weak premixed solutions). I've never brought the "brand", but always check the contents are full strength EG (aroung 1000 mg/l).

I have replaced a head on a B230 (1988) it was weeping at 150,000km. May have been related to a faulty coolant cap that meant the level went down and let some air into the system. It never lost more than 1 - 1.5l of coolant however.

The B230 engine is incredibly robust and few coolant-related troubles have been ascribed to it. Almost any coolant will work well if you follow several simple rules: flush the old coolant out completely, finishing with a distilled water flush; use the coolant at 50-50 ratio; use distilled water for makeup; and keep the level up.

The only coolant complaints recorded here relate to orange Texaco Havoline Dexcool and its use in B6300 all-aluminum engines; some report leaks. GM has had deposit problems with this same coolant, not experienced with the Prestone or Zerex Dexcool orange formulations found in the US.

Overseas, your absolute best bet in coolant is Glysantin from Zerex/BASF, used by Mercedes and others (including, as it happens, Volvo: they dye it). Zerex will be bringing this out in the US in the near future.

      Ringlee-
I have a '95 960 and have been using Texaco Dexcool coolant and have experienced some leaking problems but haven't located the leak.

Wasn't sure if your prior post suggests that Texaco Dexcool antifreeze is more likely to leak. Do you think that I should switch to another Dexcool brand?

      Comments welcome.

      Hello Steve:

Is Volvo coolant dyed Glysantin? Hopefully, I will report on A/C overhaul soon. Today, I spent time on it and all new parts are in the car. Best regards.
