knock knock, does the cam want out?? 700

ive got an 85 765 turbo....i bought the car at 169,000, and it had some valve noise, so i got the valves adjusted..every now and then i would here one lifter make noise, like a bad silence seal...so at 175,000 i pulled the head, did a valve job, put in new lifters and an IPD VX cam...its been about 10,000 miles since then and i have the same problem...and now it seemes to be there more than not...i talked to the volvo shop down the street from mine, and they said some of the motors just do that...if the valves are slightly tight, could that be a problem, (i know i dont want tight valves)..i also cannot get the valve cover to stop leaking..i even pulled off the end caps on the cam and put new sealer on them...any knowledge is appreciated

Have never had to adjust any valves on these engines. As already mentioned, these turbo engines are subject to piston slap. Our 90 and 91 both have it. The 93 with a different piston oiling system does not have it. Seems only turbos from my experince as the NA's I have had do not slap.

tight mechanical valves don't knock! 700

You want to hear a slight click, but a 'knock' is most likely piston slap.

There are little rubber pads underneath the shims that could be hardened or deteriorated/missing, but that's another story. FWIW, I've never had to adjust the valves on my B230FT (turbo) engines running amsoil synthetic. I had a shop check one once at 60K miles but the clearances were within stock. THAT engine is now at about 240K miles with the original turbo (another shibboleth punctured...turbos only last 130k miles...NOT).

tight mechanical valves don't knock! 700

the valves were way out of spec at 169,000 when i bought it....when i did the valve job, the silence seals, lifters, and cam were new..and this car had the origional oil cooled turbo up untill it started to leak exaust out of the wastegate housing at 185,000...there was NO piston play when i had the head off, so i dont think its piston slap, espically since the sound is completly random. any more suggestions?? im stumped

How can you tell your car needs a valve clearence check? Does it make any sound? I was wondering because i didn't know if that might help my engine knock problem.

theoreticly the valves should be adjusted every 30,000 miles, but that never really happens...i had one noisy lifter when i got the car so i adjusted the valves....after the valve job, i had a leaky valve cover gasket, so out of curiosity, i checked the clearance, and they are slightly tight...the noise is a tap tap tap noise that changes with rpm, and fades above 1500 RPM, but if u know what your hearing, you can tell if its a lifter or not...i have a noisy lifter, but they are all new along with the cam...and thats my problem.

        Hi,

My B230FT has been diagnosed with 'piston slap' by two Volvo mechanics. According to my mechanic, my valves are within spec. It makes a fairly loud tap, tap, tap (or clacking sound) that fades around 1300 RPM. Sounds quite similar to what you discribed. I wish I could get rid of the sound, so that my Vo could idle nice and quiet.
