An harmonic balancer question 200

Helloalloallo. You hear all the guff about the 2 piece bottom pully/harmonic bancer arrangement on B230s losing their integrity. Does the 1 piece item from a B21 fit (or an other B2x series motor pulley)?

A chum of mine has accquired for me '84 B21 245. Complete and running, but rotten beyond belief down under. I resented paying £25 but the bugger wouldn't budge on the price. I'll pick it up on Saturday and swap the pulley to Bjorn when I do the belts if it'll go.

Regards,

Big Rich.

    An harmonic balancer question 200

    Eddie,
My understanding is that the earlier engines had a forged crank and the B230 is cast. This might explain the need for an harmonic balancer to damp out vibrations on the weaker crank.Volvo certainly did not fit a more expensive (to manufacture) pulley without good reason!
Even if the solid pulley would physically fit, a broken crank would cost a lot more than the proper pulley.

    Rich -

The B21's I have had all had the split-pulley belt drive on the crank, and the B230F style is hugely different. Were I you, I would try the fit, but not expect it to work. Even if the pulley fits, the belts may not line up right.

There may be some difference in the engine's need for that heavier balancer on the B230's. Used to be that the heavy flywheel on the back of the crank did the job. Now, I don't know what's back there, especially on an auto trans car.

    Good Luck anyway,

    Bob

Thanks BC. Makes sense. I'll eyeball it and take things from there. I'll let y'all know how I get on.
