Routing wires through the firewall. 200 1988

Is it hard to route wiring through the firewall? Where is the best place to route them?

Thanks in advance

Chris Sambrooks

On the drivers side fire wall there's a small diamond-shaped metal plate that seems to serve no purpose on my car. It has two nuts spot welded to it, and there are bolts accesible from the inside which hold it on. You can see it clearly with the hood up. If you have a manual trans, it's right next to where the clutch cable comes through. I used a 3/8" drill bit and a 1/4" rubber grommet so I could run about 3 or 4 16g wires through there for my ambient temp gauge and oil pressure gauge. I chose this because it was up high on the firewall and away from the engine. It's also easy to get wires through, and it's easy to cover the hole with some tape and not worry about major water leaks.

Take out the glovebox, and there's easy access to an existing grommet. Just fish them through.

I recently routed some wires through the rubber grommet used by the hood release cable. Use a piece of coat hanger + tape to fish them through.

Make sure you seal things up with a little silicone after, (The hole will be a little deformed with the extra wires running through it).

This was the easiest way I could think of.

Good luck.

This is good advice. Failing that, the plastic firewall panels are easily drilled. Just remember to fit a gromett and seal with gloop.

Regards,

Big Rich.
