SLOOOW but Steady progress. 900 1995

So I smashed the Right Headlight in the dark while pulling final torque on the head 2 nights ago. $385 from the dealer. Once again the fine folks at Import Parts Specialists took some of the sting out of that. Still, I didn't need this. Effing Sears Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet is worn. It slips sometimes. I could have bought a couple of Snap-On's for what this light is costing me.

Need a second bolt for the new oil separator I had to buy after the other one crumbled. Can't work anymore on that side til I go get the bolt. So I am hanging the Exhaust manifolds now. I did the timing stuff and cam sensor this morning.

Father in Laws wake is tonight at 6pm. So I'll wrap up around 4. I doubt I'll spin it over until tomorrow.

Back to work.

(GOD ALMIGHTY that plate of baklava and mug of coffee tasted GOOD!)

Did you check if you can get the aftermarket body shop replacements for the headlamps? I don't even know if anyone makes them. Sometimes you can tell if you call a dealer and they don't have it in stock. If it's in stock, then the aftermarket stuff does not cover 95-98 9/S/V90 models because if there WERE aftermarket ones, nobody would buy.

Consequently, if the dealer doesn't normally stock it, they're available elsewhere for a LOT (usually 1/2 or more) less.

I don't know if they're available, but most of the aftermarket stuff is halfway decent, and around $100-150 for most lamps at wholesale. I can see if they are, tomorrow morning.

IPS knocked about $100 bucks off the deal. I think they feel sorry for me at this point.

No one makes them aftermarket. OEM is $380 each. Take it or leave it. There are NONE in the boneyards. And no.... you can't replace the glass. On 850's you can. But not the 960's.

And finally, of course..... the 95 and up are a new design. Not interchangeable with earlier 960's.

My costs have not been totalled yet, but I'd be surprised if it is below $4,500 for this little adventure.

P.S. I have been reading all of your fitful rants. But they are just so overwhelmingly eloquent and passionate that I can't adequately respond.

I can get pretty good prices (usually jobber) on OEM parts, if you aren't in a hurry for them. Let me know.

We're with you. I know that feeling about the headlight: ask me how many things I have screwed up because it was dark/cold or I was tired/upset/forgetful. Ask me about the Plymouth Valiant starter I changed on a cold January day while lying on the ice on a street in Boston.

A friend takes her car to the mechanic so that she can say, "poof: make it right!" No pain, no sweat (and no cash or satisfaction).

Coffee breaks and a little snack go a long way toward the DIY's sanity. We make a lot fewer mistakes when rested too. This isn't something you do everyday, so pace it. I never did this kind of work the 960, but have my share of valve jobs done and running. Relax, don't rush and don't break anything?

    Keep us posted your Sheik-worthiness..
