Control arm bushings/ has anyone done it out there?,/ check out my sweet 245TI! 200 1984

I'm contemplating renewing the bushings on my control arms. This past weekend I replaced my control arms on this car and I reckon I could do the control arm bushing job too. I've got a 245 turbo. I'm thinking that I'll go to a junkyard and take the control arms off of another 240 and have the old bushing taken off and new ones installed then install the replacement control arms with new bushes on the 245..

Does this sound logical? Has anyone removed the bushes without a press? How should I proceed?

Anyhow I just got this really great '84 245ti, the PO did a b230 intake mod on it, rebuilt the engine, new harness etc. this weekend I did the air intake mod on it as per turbobricks.org, it is so nice, swallows up the kids and the dog.

Selling two 242ti's check them out at:

don't replace the front ones unless they really need it in my opinion. When i did all the bushings a little while ago, i had the use of a shop, which was splendid. However, those front control arm bushings required lots of torching, hammering, and general hell to remove...i guess it was mostly due to rust though...might be easier if no rust. I know that next time, i'm going to make sure they are really bad before replacing the front ones.

    Josh,
sorry about that. I check the bently. Its the front bushings that come out using a vice and sockets. But I did hear they were difficult. I didnt attempt it, so I cant say for sure.

For the rears, you need the press. I hear they come out easy, but you need a press(according to the bently.) The guy at the machine shop charged me less that originally stated. He said the rears came out easy , once he found the correct set of tools.

As i stated before, I didnt have the front bushings replaced.

The rear lower control arm bushings (at the axle end) are in the axle, not the arm. If you don't have the tool, it's a good job for a shop.

      Hey Evan,

The language is confusing. On the front control arm, according to the bently manual, there are front and rear bushings. The front bushing is the one at the cross member. The rear is in the round housing attached to the frame , rear of engine compartment.

      Peace.

I didnt need extra control arms to accomplish the task. They're easy to remove.
I got them to the machine shop at approx 3:00p. They were ready to go by 4:15p. Car was on the road the next morning.

I just replaced control arm bushings in my 90-240. Only the rears needed replacing. I had them done at a machine shop(25.00 total).
However, I read that the rears are , relatively, easy, and can be done using a large vice and different size sockets. The fronts , Im told, are monsters and need a monster press.

Ive also heard that the fronts out last the rears 4 to 1. My car has about 109,000mi and the rears were just starting to go. The fronts were like new. Tight, no cracks, no movement.

    Good luck.

I agree with this information... The rear bushing of the front control arm can be replaced DIY without a press. Personally, I have used a hammer, some large sockets, a railroad iron, and a big vice to do this. I have yet to see an instance where the front bushing has needed replacement.
