What is the best year for the 780 turbo.

From my readings the 1990 780 appears to be the better year. What are your opinions?

Although it seems that the 780's only came with auto transmission, I believe there were a few standards that came through. Can anyone enlighten me on this? I know they were only available on the Turbo models. Any input?

The 91 940 SE is a nice option. Rear sway bars and the luxury of a 960, but the reliability of a B230FT. More parts available.

Sure there are 89, 90 and 91 780s. The 90 and 91 have the LH 2.4 and turbo + making them the highest output B230FTs of all and using the 016 AMM and 563 ECU and I would have to say I prefer those. If you find a 91, it will be badged "Coupe" and have the Bertone signature on the dash and a CD changer in the trunk making it a bit more unusual, though it is simply a 90 extended for one last partial year.

I believe the 91's also had a rear swaybar. While this is rather desirable, I wouldn't hold your breath for a 91 to come along until you check out the production numbers. There were very few built in 91.

From what I read there were something like only 780s 300 imported to the U.S. in 91. So the chance of coming across a 91 780 are very slim. I think there were about 900 90 780s so there is a little better chance with the 90. I have probably seen 2 in my travels over the past year or so in NC. So I know the 780s are out there. Are my chances of finding a 84.5 242 better?

          Better yet

If I was in teh market, I'd be looking at the 5.0 conversion 780 for sale in the classified section. Not only more power, but it's a stick, so you get to drive instead of just steer.

I would go for one with a K block (stronger rods), so I think that's late '89(?) or later. I don't think there was a turbo Bertone in '90, so look for an '89 or '91 780 with a B230FT. They all came as automatics (AW71).
