Q: Limited Slip Additives or Special Oil?

I noticed that the owners manuals and repair manuals all say to use the Volvo special additive if your Volvo has a Limited Slip Differential. What I am unsure of is whether by additive they mean something you put in the gears in addition to the gear oil, or if they mean 2 quarts of a special oil that has the Ltd. Slip additive in it already?

Volvo wants $16.00 for one pint of the additive. For a 2 Quart gear box fill, this comes to $64.00 without the tax.

Are there any generic oils with the additive already in it, or if not, are there any after market products that are more reasonable in price (CRC products? ... Valvoline products?)

Thanks,
Diyer

Q: Limited Slip Additives or Special Oil?

All AMSOIL synthetic gear lubes are formulated with limited slip additive included.
Far as I know, Volvo doesn't mean to use just the additive--if you check the instructions, they probably mean to add 8 to 16 oz to the gear lube you put in.

Q: Limited Slip Additives or Special Oil?

Volvo means a separate additive to a petroleum based gear oil of the appropriate rating and viscosity.

Good synthetic gear oils are designed with limited slip differentials in mind.

I say your best bet is to use Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 or 75W-140 gear oil, although not "cheap" (you can fill your rear for under $25), it still is less expensive than the additive plus other gear oils, you get the better performance, better protection and better efficiency of synthetic gear oil. Plus it'll basically last longer than the car.

Q: Limited Slip Additives or Special Oil?

Volvo sells an expensive lubricant for lsd's. It is used all by itself instead of conventional lube. I installed a lsd in my '80 242GT and had lots of problems with grabbing and chattering until I changed to the Volvo lube. Ran fine afterwards. Why? I have no idea but the difference was dramatic.

Yes you are correct, they also sell a lube with friction additive....I was answering his question directly. Whatever you were using before probably did not have the correct friction properties.

Q: Limited Slip Additives or Special Oil?

The additives are intend to make to coefficients of static and dynamic friction equal. The reason for the chatter is the coefficent of dynamic friction is less than the coefficient of static friction. With these unequal coefficients of friction, the clutches hold firmly until slip begins. Once the slip begins, the coefficient of friction drops and the clutches slip easlily until there is no load on them. Now that the load is off the clutches, they grab ahold again and the cycle repeats.
