turbo cars 200 84

Just a quick question in what year did volvo first start installing water cooled turbo in there 200. thanks

Volvo never offered the water-cooled turbo in the 240.

The water-cooled turbo first appeared (stock) in the '87 700, and the last year for the 240 turbo was '85.

However, Volvo produced a retrofit kit allowing you to replace a non-cooled turbo with a water-cooled turbo in either the 240 or the 700. As I've heard, it's a pricey kit, along with the upgraded turbo—but perhaps it's cheapest in the long run.

To Don Foster thanks very much for the info, as I have a 84 242 T with a water cooled turbo which as you state mush have been installed after the car was bought, it also has a small heat exchanger on the passenger side beside the rad I beleve this is for cooling of the water for the turbo, is that correct?

Yes, it's a replacement. Consider yourself lucky on two counts: Having a replacement turbo, and having the more desirable turbo. The cooling water for the turbo circulates from the regular cooling system.

I agree with Paul — your car should have a second small radiator (as you correctly pointed out, a heat exchanger). However, every 240 turbo I've seen, including mine, has this heat exchanger near the battery. If you have a heat exchanger near the fuel distributor, it must be a custom add-on.

Hello again thanks for all the help, the small heat exchanger is on the battery side of the car, I just know that the car goes very fast, I can keep up to a 5.0 L mustange but not much more.

If it's like my '82 245T, the battery is on the driver's side, which is the left side. Mine is an auxiliary oil cooler, and I believe it's standard on the turbo 240s.

Hmmm. Then I'd say the Mustang is hittin' on all six......

Hi Don,

I met a local guy last week that has an 242 turbo coupe. He fitted it with an intercooler as well as a small auxilary radiator mounted in front of the original radiator. He uses an electric fuel pump to pull coolant from the auxilary radiator and runs it through the turbo and then dumps it back into the cooling system.

Sounds to me like a bit of custom engineering. How do you suppose it helps?

I think he said he believes that the extra reduction in temperature that takes place on the coolant draws more heat away from the turbocharger. Our conversation moved on and I forgot to ask if he had considered running the electric pump on a timer switch after shut down.

My 744Ti has the original 'oil cooled' turbo even at 256Kmiles. The replacement would be water cooled which has some extra plumbing for the water. The lower radiator hose has an extra section added for the turbo water pipe. After to car is shut off, the water moves through the turbo to the overflow tank by the siphon method. Heat rises and the water circulates. A water pump would be unnecessary.

My car has an oil coller on the drivers side of the radiator. On the NA 740, there are those little rubber doors to allow air to pass.

How I have managed to escape turbo replacement baffles me, but I'm glad. When I change the oil, I usually take off the turbo inlet hose and check the turbo for problems. None so far. I need to change my oil this week.

A heat exchanger on the passenger side would not be stock. There is an oil cooler on driver's side of the radiator, perhaps someone relocated it...but that would be strange.

I'm pretty sure they didn't ever have factory installed water cooled turbo's on the B21FT in the 240. I think you could upgrade in late calender year 85 but they were done with 240T's by then. I'm not a history expert...get ahold of Mr. John Laughlin.
