My injectors are okay, but my cooling system is crazy! 200 89

Hi guys! Thanks to all of you who helped me to reinstall my injectors. Now, I have a problem with my cooling system. I replaced my waterpump gasket and seals because I had a little coolant leak near the head gasket. So, I applied petroleum jelly at the new seals, like in the bentley manual, I carefully scraped the old gasket and my father helped me to squeeze the pump up to reinstall it.

I installed the pulley, the new belts and the fan.

The engine now works fine (I think I made a good job about the injectors) but it took almost 2 minutes to get the temp guage to the red line!!! :((

The heater doesn't work, and I didn't forget to refill the cooling system.

It's like the water pump doesn't work! The hoses are cold.

What's wrong??

p.s. I now have a big coolant leak.. but I don't know where, It was dark outside when I gave up.

If yours is like my 1987 you should take one side of the top hose off when you are refilling. this should help to stoip the air lock. good luck

You probably just have air in the cooling system. Once the car cools down it may "burb" or it may not. This happens sometimes and usually a couple of start ups until the temperature begins to climb (allow to cool between trys) will remedy the problem. Another way to deal with it is to SLIGHTLY loosen the thermostat housing while filling the cooling system. When the coolant begins to drip from the housing snug up the fasteners. That should do it. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge as you obviously have been until everything checks out.

JP --

After installing a new water oump (what I really mean is draining the cooling system), it's common to have no heat, and also to experience a giant "BURP" from the cooling system.

An air pocket can form in the block and also in the heater preventing complete refilling. Also, this air pocket can get into the pump, impeding circulation (pumping) and allowing the engine to overheat slightly at the initial start-up.

Open the heater valve fully (to permit flow), allow the engine to cool, refill, and retry.

After you get the car running and the engine temp stabilizes, recheck the coolant level.

Avoid scalding yourself.

"...now have a big coolant leak..."

This might be a real leak, or it might simply be the burp. Nonetheless, carefully examine the "mushroom" seal 'tween the pump 'n head, the O-ring where the heater pipe connects to the pump, and around the pump-to-block gasket.

I heard the BURP 200 89

Okay, I'll try it.

The burp was made when I disconnected the fat rubber hose from the pump..

(then almost 1/2 gallon of coolant went out of the hose... and soaked the alternator. I think that I'll never be able to drain my coolant without soaking all the garage's floor and the plastic splash pan doesn't help!!) Is anyone succeed to drain all the coolant from the little drain plug in the cylinder block??

"...succeed to drain all the coolant from the little drain plug in the cylinder block??"

I think the lack of a radiator drain petcock is another minor Volvo design fubar. I've never trusted the block petcock — always the damn thing'll snap off. Nobody wants a snapped petcock.

"...soaked the alternator..."

No harm. Probably washed off some road grime.

"...soaking all the garage's floor..."

Keep pets away from antinfreeze. I hear it's not good for them (like they die, 'n stuff).

"...the plastic splash pan doesn't help!!"

No, it IS a pain when you wanna get the water out. But it's good when the water wants to get in.

Re: I heard the BURP 200 89

Thanks to all of you!!!!!

My car is now running!!!

Yeah, baby!! It was the air-in-water-pump thing.

For me, disconnecting the upper hose didn't work so, I started the car, waited it to get hot and I unscrewed a little the two nuts retaining the thermostat.. after I said something like "god, help me!!" a big amount of steam went out and I rescrewed it on the block tight.. I never heard my cooling fan working so much!! And the water temp dropped suddently.

Thank you guys, you saved my life!! (yeah, really!)

I'll can go to college tomorrow :))
