Need help on a 245T 200 1983

Hello everybody!

Yes! I bought the car ('83 245T). Yes Paul, its got a some rust spots. Now, I need some help. It seems to idle ok. Accelerates slowly until it reaches about 2500 rpm, then it seems like the engine has no more power, the engine running a little hot also. Any hints on what could be wrong? So far: wireharness needs work, major tune-up, some grounds need to be reattached.

What would be a healthy compression reading for this engine (B21FT). I haven't check yet, but I would like to know. Thank you guys for any reply.

The CR for your engine should according to factory specs be 7.5:1

Re: Need help on a 245T 200 1983

When I bought my '82 245 it wouldn't go over 20 mph. It had a new turbo and a buncha other new stuff.

Cat plugged tighter than a pig's you-know-what.

One day I replaced timing belt on wife's '83 GL (non-turbo). Ran fine around town, but wouldn't accelerate on the highway.

When I corrected my one-tooth timing error, it ran great.

I once helped solve the opposite problem on an '87 740 — dead, dead, dead at low speed, and positively dangerous (lowwww) acceleration. But ok at highway speeds.

The alignment pin 'tween cam and sprocket had sheared. The t-belt timing appeared ok because all the marks all lined up, but the cam timing was NOT ok.

Re: Need help on a 245T 200 1983

Thank you guys!

I checked the exhaust tailpipe, only a very small amount of gases are coming out. Now, could you suggest any place where I can buy a CAT for a good price.

Thank you again for any replies.

Re: Need help on a 245T 200 1983

Depends if you wanna go perf or not. A 2 1/2" or larger down pipe, free flow cat and exhaust system are nice...and you will notice a difference if all else is in good tune. Purchase at a local speed shop or buy the hi po cat at a mail order speed place, (Jegs, Summit, etc) and have local hi po muff/ place do up a mandrel bent system....

If you wanna go stock, contact the usual suspects, RPR, (check this site) etc for an aftermarket bolt on cat/down pipe. As good as Volvo and a lot less dough...expect to pay around $200, give or take a benji.

You could also join VCOA and employ the 15-25% discount to afford the Volvo part. I got my new cat from Volvo for $190 after 25% off.

Exaust restriction (cat) or timing belt jumped a tooth. Around 140 psi.
