I am replacing tires and wonder how wide you can go on the Aluminun Volvo Wheels? The car has P185/65-R15 now - Can I go to 60 series? Or 195, 215 etc....

My 740 originally had 185/65R15s. The next set were 195/60R15s. The last two sets have been 195/65R15s, which I consider ideal for this car. A little wider than the originals, but still good in rain and snow, and a little softer ride in keeping with the car's character. Also, they are taller, which makes the speedometer a bit more accurate, although it still reads about six per cent fast. I understand that this is a common problem with 700/900 series speedometers, at least with the metric versions (I'm in Canada).

I have Dunlop 205/55R16 on my '94 940.

thinner tires = better milage.

thicker tires = look silly, rub, hurt milage, squash whole cat instead of

just the head.

I take it that it's the latter you're after? ;-)

195/60-15 is the next size wider, and a direct replacement. This is the widest tire that's really recommended for a 6" wide rim, but you can go to 205/55-15 if you want.

I think the 900s will take up to a 225mm tire with the right rim.
