Dome light won't come on 700 1988

I just bought my first Volvo, a 1988 with 165,000 miles on it. in quite good shape and runs well. a minor problem or two. i need help with this one: the overhead dome lights won't come on when you open the driver's door. They work with all the other doors. any advice on what the problem is and how to fix it? and cost?

thanks

Don't forget to make sure the switch has a good ground. I had one that seemed to be a bad switch but was simply a bit of corrosion under the screwhead that mounts the switch to the jamb and provides its ground.

The pin switch has probably gone bad. Try wiggling the pin (pluunger) that sticks-out, if the light comes on the switch is bad. A single screw and the switch is removed from the door frame post to replace the switch.

    --OR--

On some cars you can rotate the pin (plunger) 1/4 turn and the light does not come on when the door is in the open position, this is great when your working inside the car for an extended period and don't want to drain the battery.
