How to test the heater thermostatic control? 200 92

Fellow brickers,

A few weeks ago I was pulling a non-ac blower motor out of a 91 sedan at a junkyard when I noticed the valve that controls the heater core looked rather fancy compared to mine. Seems to have a thermostatic control on it. Mine is just a on-off valve.

I seem to be adjusting the temperature forever on my car, everytime you drive a bit faster the heater heats up etc. So I went back a few days ago to pull the fancy valve out of the '91.

It certainly looks sophisticated (see link to photo), but I want to make sure it works before I install it. The problems is when I heat or chill the coil at the end (what sticks in the heater core assembly) with water nothing seems to happen with the thermostatic control. I would expect to see some movement.....

How can I test the operation of the valve, should I heat the valve as well? Might this valve be broken? (I only paid $8 for it. How does it work with a metal tube anyway?

Your input would be much appriciated.

Reg,

Jorn -- I've replaced the old style thermostatic valve far too often. They seem to last only a couple of years before you begin to loose the thermostatic sensitivity. Then its either full on or full off. Next time I'm going to go with the new style manual control.

You know, I was adjusting my heater this morning, as you do, and was thinking about all the comments I got, I realised that one of the beauties of the 240 is it's simplicity!

When you read the AWD/FWD board you only hear of complex problems and bad Volvo service. We 240 owners don't suffer that problem: 'Volvo service', we can fix it ourselves! Hurree!

I'll keep things as they are and keep adjusting my temperature, as you do......

      Thanks,

Those old-style valves were replaced by the new onoff-valves for several reasons. Of most importance: the old valves are notorious for leaking. Both externally and internally (you wonīt be able to shut off the heater completely). The thermostat functionality also is marginal, to say the least. Iīd guess yourīs isnīt broken, it just ainīt able to compensate for more than extremely small temp changes. Iīve driven several Volvos with that kind of valves and they have always failed. Nowadays you get a rebuild kit with the new style valve when you go to the dealer with your old car.

IMO itīs not worth the possible trouble putting that old thing in there. And did you check your heater out - since youīve got the new design there might not be any predrilled holes for the temp sensor any more...

Ok, Ok, forget about that picture link, I haven't got my websides very straight I'am afraid.

    This should do the trick:

I replaced mine with the new style one just before winter and it works just like its supposed to. Mail ordered it and it was cheaper than the old style. Also came with all the parts needed to retrofit.
