My 240 wagon schlep,sputter ,pop,bang! 200 1986

I have a problem with my 240. There is no power. It just doesn't want go! It will idle but when I press down on the gas It dies. When it was running it was idleing rough and would backfire. It was slowly getting worse but I could still drive it. Today I decided to take it in the shop. I figured I would let my mechanic look at it and set up an appointment. I didn't make it...the car just died. I can start it and the car will idle but then it just sputters and coughs when I give it gas like it has a bad cold. Anyone know whats wrong? Something fuel related? Injectors or airflow meter? Maybe a sensor? I had the tank pump fixed a month ago. Just wondering if it's something simple like a vacume line or bad fuel filter. I had new plugs,rotor,cap and air filter put on two weeks ago. Thanks, Perry

have 'em check the mass airflow sensor in-line between the air filter and the throttle body. That did the trick for me. Your symptoms sound the same.

Your airmass meter went to hell in a handbasket. This exact thing happened to my dad's 245 years ago. Replace the airmass meter.

Thanks! That was one of my thoughts. How can I check it without going out a buying one to see if thats the problem?

While the car is off, disconnect the sensor on the AMM. Try to start the car, and if it runs better than usual, then its your problem. Pretty simple test, good luck.

Thanks,I tried that and it will idle but won't move. I unplugged it the sensor. It's at my mechanics so I will have him test the AMM to see if it's good. Thanks! Perry

Well this has been happening for about a month. Rain? Whats rain have to do with anything? It's been pretty dry!

What's rain have to do with it? The symptoms you have described can indicate a cracked distributor cap. My first impulse is to check the simple stuff, and it has mostly worked. Sorry that it won't work for you today.

I put a new cap rotor and plugs on the car when these symtoms started thinking that was the problem. Thanks, Perry

I have the same problem on my 240. I also own a 760, so I borrowed the AMM, and the Air control valve (choke)and installed them on the 240. Problem continues. I don't think its a defective fuel pump, due to the fact that it would be a hard fault, not intermittent. My next move is to try the speed sensor and the fuel relay. I will keep you updated.

I solved my spit splader no go problem. I used the screw driver handle tap test. You take the handle end and tap on all valves sensors, fuel filters, pump, dist, ignitin coil, elec harness, ect ect. Do this while the car eng is running, until you can induce the misfire or stall the eng in my case. Because my car would run ok while it wasn't moving , when down the road it would act up like yours. So when tapping on the electrical wires it shut down, followed to the ignition coil. It had a loose terminal end at a power wire, swapped to an other male end and bingo mission accomplished. TRy that. good luck.
