That's exeactly what I did when I changed mine out recently. It was a piece of cake. When you get the seal off( the seal should slip right out with the bearing cap removed) take some 400 to 600 grit wet/dry snadpaper and dip it in kerosene and remove any carbon build up in front of the seal area. When I did this on mine, there wasn't even a line on the cam where the orginial seal had been running. Slip the seal on(lubricate the seal with oil) and torque the bolts for the bearing cap.
The overdrive relay is next to the glove box on the console side(blue cover). The relay may or may not be the problem. A bad 4th gear switch has been known to exhibit the same problem as you describe. To check out the relay and wiring, take the wire off the 4th gear switch and groud the wire. If you can hit the OD button hear the relay click and the light comes on, you can probably bet the 4th gear switch is bad. If grounding the wire, the relay doesn't click then the relay needs to be checked out( possible bad solder connections). There have been many posts on this problem. Resoldering seems to be a way of life on these relays.
The solenoid has to have a good ground(been known to break off at the connection). Check out the wiring and make sure the connections are good.
Check the fluid level in the transmission(if it is too low no OD). This should at least get you started on getting your OD useable. Good Luck.
