"knock" at idle? 200 1983

Having a bit of trouble with my '83 245DL (B23F with Chrysler ignition). It runs and drives fine at speed - no unusual hesitation or anything, but at idle, it has an irregular "knocking" sound. Doesn't sound like detonation, but more of a "thunk" sound. I can't seem to tell where it's coming from...

Cap, rotor and plugs were changed ~8k miles ago with a kit from IPD (white cap). New battery three weeks ago. Due for an 3k mile oil change, but that's all. Oh, and 202k miles on the motor.

Only odd thing is that when I popped the hood one night to check it out, I could actually see the sparks inside the cap while it was running. Not sure if I should be seeing that or not...

Any ideas? Can't get a new cap and rotor immediately - will have to order them. Anything else to look for?

Re: "knock" at idle? 200 1983

Pat,

Yeah, I've noticed the sparking in the cap of my 82 with the Chrysler ignition. I wouldn't worry about it. I concluded a long time ago that the caps were crap, although I've never had any trouble with them, but I have to say they don't last 30 kmiles. As for the knocking, how about a bottom end, as in rod knock? Or mabye a failed motor mount that letting the downpipe or something else hit something. Good luck.

get a few feet of rubber tubing. stick one end in your ear and use the other as a stethescope & track it down. If it's coming from the middle/bottom of the block, switch to synthetic & start saving those pennies.

Re: "knock" at idle? 200 1983

Well, turns out things aren't as bad as they seem. Got a friend over for a sanity check, and he noticed the fan wobbling a bit. Turns out that the wobble coincides with the noise. Checked things out a bit more, and sure enough, the water pump is starting to leak a bit of fluid.

Looks like the bearings are worn in the water pump, which is likely causing the sound. Will be replacing the water pump right soon.

Thanks for the replies! Glad to find out it's not terminal. Then again, it would let me go ahead and do that turbo swap :)
