Relay location 200 81

I finally got to the boneyard today to p/u a spare overdrive relay. Now, I need to know which of the several I got is the right one. There were three on a rail behind the center heater vents (Small silver ones, about 1" square. There was also a larger (about 2"x1.5x1.5)black one clipped on down below the heater controls. Since I was told the O/D relay was to the left of the glove box, and much easier to get to than the ones on the rail, I'm soooo confused! (Not an uncommon problem when dealing with electrical stuff) Can anybody out ther enlighten me?

Thanks

It's fixed! Total costof $3.50 (I went to the U-Pull-It and found the right one (I maybe could have soldered the one I had, but since the last time I soldered anything was 8th grade matal shop, I figured replacement was the way to go) Tightened up the loose ground connection, and it's as good as new. I'll save the old relay, since it may have just been the bad ground. Thanks to all- I'm figuring that you guys saved me saved $100-150, especially since that $3.50 relay was $61.50 at the local dealer.

    On to the next project...

The metal relays sound like the door lock relays. The black relay might be for the power windows or flasher or rear defroster relay or any number of other uses.

Usually, the OD relay is white, orange, or blue, depending on the year and tranny style (A/T or manual).

Most often you can restore an OD relay to perfect operating condition by resoldering the circuit board. The same is true for most fuel pump relays (except for the sealed relays used on the early LH systems).

The picture below shows the OD relay on my '82 245t with manual transmission. Once the glovebox is removed from the dash (7 screws) it's easily accessible.

You ain't got it yet. Sorry. The three cubes on the rail could be the power locks (takes 2) and the power windows. The O/D relay may or may not be mounted/clipped on to that rail. It is significantly larger than the cubes and that the other one you got which was the a/c relay. On the left side opposite the a/c relay you can find the flasher relay.

The O/D relay is so easily seen from looking in the glove compartment hole and to the left, sometimes it just lays there. They are different for auto and manual, label what you get them out of. I use white-out to mark.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
