i have been posting before about my fuel pump troubles (as have half the world it seems ;-). Anyway.. I went to the volvo dealer/mechanic yesterday and he said that because volvo dont manufacture the pre 80 fuel pump (main) anymore, they now have a retrokit fit available to fit a newer pump to the older cars. what i want to know is are the newer 80-83 k-jet pumps able to deliver the proper amount of fuel to my 79 k-jet? why are they almost half the price?

The prepump for my 1980 240 DL was made by AC Delco if I remember correctly. I only use the Volvo dealer as a last resort. Try aftermarket parts stores, they should be able to get a pump for you. I am fairly certain the 79 and 80 would use the same pump, since the engines are virtually identical. Mailorder parts stores should also be able to provide. Try alloemvolvoparts.com if you can wait for a few days. They list the prepump for $36.31. Happy hunting!

Wild guess here... Did the pre'80s not come with the in-tank pump? It's my understanding that early 240s didn't have this prepump, and the prepump was added early on in the 240 model run. Don't know when the change was made. If this guess is correct, then maybe early 240 K-jets lacking the prepump needed to be more musclebound? Again...just a guess...

And...assuming my guess is correct, then *you* would need a prepump as part of this 'kit' installation if you don't already have one.

I don't know what the retrofit involves, but I do know that my 77 242 had a (noisy) prepump.

sounds like a good theory, since a lot of pre 79s didnt have prepumps. mine does however (it was one of the first things i changed when i started having the hestiation troubles), and it came from the factory that way.
