AW71 to M45(?) swap. 700 1991

Hey,

I was at my Volvo mechanic's the other day and I ended up talking with a guy who has a '90 740 GLE (16 valve) wagon with an M45(?) (electronic 5th). Anyway, we were talking about how great the cars were when he looked inside mine and said: "OH, you have an Auto! I said:"Yah, I know, a slush box....." You know what he said next: "Do you want to swap? My wife can't drive a standard." Slightly surprised and excited I said: "Yah, maybe" My Auto has 243K km on it and his std has about 120K km on it and a NEW clutch(!). My mechanic said it would cost $500-$600 CDN between the two of us to swap. I figured all said and done it would be around $400 CDN each. Also, I'm pretty sure my rear main seal has a slow leak. Would that be easy(cheap) to replace with the tranny out? Is the swap a good idea? I love standards! (the AW71 is a nice auto though!) Any advise, etc? Should I make my '91 740T wagon a standard!?! Would it be much faster? THANKS in advance!

    Re: AW71 to M46 swap. 700 1991

Thanks for the responses so far! Would the M46 be harder on my turbo? Obviously I'd be inclined to drive a little more agressive and rev my B230FT a little higher sometimes. Do you guys think it's worth the money? Can I expect any problems from the M46 in the not so distant future? I need advise and input to push me one way or the other. The money (or lack of it) is the hardest part. Thanks very much!

      Re: AW71 to M46 swap. 700 1991

You would most likely end up revving the motor higher, both because of the fact that you'll now have the manual, and because you'll have the rear-end ratio from the auto. (I did this swap on my 780T, the rear was a 3.73, I beleive manuals had 3.54 in the 700's...)

The acceleration is better with the M46/auto-rear-end-ratio combo, it's a lot of fun!

One thing to check on is the flywheel position sensors on both cars: both a 90 and a 91 should have the perimiter holes around the flywheel/flexplate, but there are two possible patterns: 40 holes and 58 holes. If they have the same, great! If they're different, you'll have to get another flywheel and another flexplate. (You can check the holes in the flexplate while the Auto tranny is still in, but the M46 you'll have to pull to check.)

      Good luck! It's worth it!

        Paul,

How much higher would my engine rev? Would it be a lot or just like 100 or maybe 200 RPM more at the same speed in 5th? I don't want my B230FT to be screeming at around 120 kph (75 mph). I also don't want to wear my engine or turbo out prematurely because of it revving too high at crusing speeds. Thanks for the help!

Highway cruising is affected, but I forget by how much. (It's neglible.) with M46 and 3.73 rear I think I'm at 3100rpm or so at 80mph, nothing exciting. (Now my Miata, STOCK it runs like 4000 at 80...) I have a 1/2hour highway commute, with the cruise control at 80 pretty much all the time, you'd think I'd recall where the tach sits all this time... :)

    Rear seal work ain't bad - it's a definitely FIX-IT anytime the tranny's out.

I'm certainly not against it. Much faster ... maybe. I'm not too sure of the 0-60 times they had when they were new.

    More enjoyable ... of course!

-- Kane ... mainly on the weekends for me. Auto's are easier during the long morning and afternoon commutes in SoCal.

About swapping... I'm sure I could do it myself, I don't know how to value it though, and especially in Canadian dollars. It might be fun if you two are mechanically inclined and And doing the rear main seal is like 5 minutes (if you don't push it in too far and get it stuck) and $25 US.
