Christmastime for my Volvo!! 200 1983

Okay,

Good News: Got a deal to get a whole 242 Turbo (bad turbo and wiring harness), minus the wheels, for $100 this weekend.

Bad News: No way to transport entire vehicle the 5 hours from there to here. Also, not willing to take life into own hands by exposing wife to another 'Volvo Adventure'.

Thus, I am forced to rob the car of as many parts as I can get in 4-5 hours and still fit in my truck.

My Haynes Manual stinks. I got it from the library, and while it is very old and extremely disorganized, it gives me no good info for what I need. This being my first 'shopping spree', I'm also looking for any helpful advice. This is what I'm considering. . .

-Front Fender (passenger side) and headlight/blinker assemblies

-Dash removal (I know, his probably is just as bad as mine, but I want to be prepared)

-Steering wheel, mine is trashed (do I need a steering wheel puller?)

I am hoping the dash is easier than the one in my truck, which I never got out. Of course I need more parts than just these, but considering time and space, these are a priority.

If YOUR car is your daily driver, there's lotsa fun stuff to grab if you have the time

I'd grab the turbo, even if it's bad, use it as a core someday and reduce your downtime if you're ever replacing your own turbo, or rebuild it when you're bored.

Valve cover: to clean or polish without taking your car off the road.

Suspension bits: anything with a bushing pressed into it, again, you can replace the bushings, and even paint, while still driving your car every day...

All the interior bits that look at least as good as yours.

Bring a power-screwdriver, things will go faster, and you're more likely to remove something if it means just pulling the trigger!

Can you tow it if it has wheels? Tricky on a 5-hour drive, but do-able. Get some wheels from a junkyard - they are maybe $25 each. Put'em on, wire up the hazard flashers, and make sure you and your towed driver understand how to drive without power steering or brakes. Set up some hand or horn signals and have a grand adventure.

Use a 15 or 20-foot tow strap. Both cars have a towing loop front and rear, (unless there's a trailer hitch) on the RH side. Add the cost to the exorbitant price you paid for the whole car, and make us all green with envy.

Pull all the fuel lines that attach to the fuel distributor (these things cost about $50 each at the dealership). If the car has an intercooler, take it. Take any trim that's good (such as the grille and headlight bezels). I'd also take things like small fasteners (such as the little guys that hold the under-dash black trim). And how about the under-hood sound insulator? I think you already mentioned the front turn signal assemblies; how about the tail light assemblies, too?

Basically I like to scavange stuff that might get damaged in a fender-bender (such as the grille or the turn signals), or might get lost while repairing something else (such as the trim fasteners).

You can pull the steering wheel without a puller. You will need a 27MM Deep Socket. And also a 1/2 externsion. The socket is cheap at sears and many volvos use that size on the steering wheel

Yeah, I'm a bit jealous but that's OK. The dashrealy isn't bad at all to remove.Unbolt and remove the center/under console first, then there are two main bplts, one on either side (after disconecting the wiring for lights and instruments of course) then it just lifts out. While you're at it, take it out to a shop and have it tped off with leather if want a nicer dash top.

You won't need a puller for the steering wheel.

The front fnder can be tricky depending on what tools you have. I use a chisel to seperate the fender from the nose clip. The fender took me longer than the dash.

If the exhaust is stainless, that's always nicee to have.

If the carpets are good, they'd be nice to take out and heve cleaned well and of cours sare door pockets are great.

If it's not oo inaccessable and the car has ess miage than yours, I'd grab te roll bars.

Relays and lighting and other details that either fail or break are always good to have backups for. You'll do very well! Congratulations on a grat purchase! Hey, on top of that, you may even make your moey back on e-bay! Quite possible turn a profit!

if you have a truck you could rent just the trailer from UHaul or one of the others. Then you'd have no time limit and you'd certainly be able to make back the money on ebay!!!!!
