Engine and Transmission Swap. Help! 140-160 1974

I am going to swap a B20 Carbureated engine for my B20 Fuel Injected Engine and need advice so this runs as smoothly as possible.

My car is a 1974 144 FI

The engine is coming from a 1971 145s

1: Currently in the car is the 4 speed manual. I want to put in the rebuilt engine with an M410 (4spd w/ OD) since I am doing the swap. What does this entail? Is it only a matter of cutting a new hole for the shift lever and repositioning the mounting bracket? (oh, and using a shortened driveshaft (which is not a problem).

2: Since my engine was Fuel Injected, I have a throttle cable rather than the throttle arm assembly. I assume that the throttle arm asembly will simply mount right in place? Or does something else need to be done?

Any other advice you can offer would be most appreciated.

Re: Engine and Transmission Swap. Help! 140-160 1974

Starting from the bottom: If the M410 was originally fitted to a

B30 (as nearly all of them were, in the 164), its bellhousing is

too big to bolt up to a B20. They look alike but are about an inch different in diameter. Quickest way to tell is to measure between

the top two bolt holes on the bellhousing and the measure between

the top two bolts on the engine's mating surface. They are about

1/2" different there but I don't remember the exact measurements.

I have changed several engines and one car over from FI to carbureted.

At the time it was my only choice. Now, if I had the choice I would

stay with the FI, especially on a 74, as it is a VERY trouble-free

system, probably more so than the carbs. I'm not absolutely sure but

I think it should be fairly easy to put the CIS FI system onto an

earlier FUEL INJECTED B20 (one that formerly had D-Jetronic injection),

but you will need all the stuff from the donor car as the system is

entirely different.

Re: Engine and Transmission Swap. Help! 140-160 1974

The M410 transmission won't fit unless it has the

B20 output shaft and also if you have one of the

couple hundred B20 -> M410 bell housings. These

were on only a few of one year of 1800, are rare,

and in general only desirable if you wish to make

a B20 with B30 power for use in racing.

The M410 is not a volvo built transmission, and

was only used in the fuel injected B30s. Find out

what it came from -- it is almost 100% certain that

it came from a 164.

I've read from topi's web site that the M410

can use the top off of an M40 or M41, but this is

the smallest of your problems when using it in a

140.

You would be better off sourcing a M41, which is

the correct transmission for this car. I have an

M41 that I'm probably not going to use, and would

like to have an M410 for my 164. I'd probably

even throw in some money given the rarity of the

M410 transmission. Are you the guy in colorado?

I'm in riverside, california.

Re: Engine and Transmission Swap. Help! 140-160 1974

A couple of issues I can help with. You will have to use the fuel pump from the carbed engines, the one for the fuel injection will make too much pressure. You don't "have" to cut a hole for the shifter, the old one will work if you swap the entire top. That is IF the tranny is an 41 and not a 410 as you say. It is odd that a 410 would be in a 140, they usually were in the 1800's and some of the 160's. If it indeed is a 410, the tops may not switch. If you have the donor car, the throttle parts should swap. If you have the manifolds for the carbed engine, especially the exhaust, it will help But, for the most part, it should be a straight ahead swap.

Good luck,

Leonard

Re: Engine and Transmission Swap. Help! 140-160 1974

Thanks for the advice. Basically he has a 1971 145S with a rebuilt engine (headers, dual carbs, etc) and I have a 1974 144 FI - we're hoping to pull my engine out and put his in its place. He currently has an M40 transmission (the 4-spd) connected to his engine and I have an M40 connected to mine. However he has a 410 transmission in the shop which I want to put in in place of the 4 speed.

It's definitely not the M41 tranny.

Is it worth it to put in the 410 or should we keep it simple until I can find an M41 and then make the swap?

Re: Engine and Transmission Swap. Help! 140-160 1974

I am not a 410 expert, but I seem to remember a lot of red flags with the 410, how it fits, how the clutch works, durabitity, etc. Wait and see what George Downs might tell you. He has much more experience than I would here. I have changed several injected motors to carbed applications and that is about all of my claim to fame.
