Life of black coolant tank cap 200 1985Ti

How much life are you getting out of yours? The rubber overpressure seal seems to just not last more the 3+ years (I was expecting 5 years minimum??).

Is Dexcool harder on this seal than old green or Volvo coolant?

I just bought a new cap since the turbo/wire harness work in early 1998.

    Paul

When I bought my 242T last year, the cap that was on there before started leaking. I have no idea what coolant was in there or how old it was, it looked quite old though and the service records dont indicate replacement of that item.

I would expect this one to last 5 years or so like you are expecting.

The other responses appear to be NA cars, do you think that the additional heat the turbocharger puts into the coolant system would attribute to quicker coolant cap failure?

    take care

No doubt that the water cooled turbocharger puts huge demands on a system essentially designed for a NA car. Hard on the oil system, hard on the cooling system.....but gotta have my turbo!

I'm about 100% sure it has nothing to do with the coolant. I put the new cap on the other day and after some hard hot boosted driving, no hissing. I think the heat and hence pressure (PV=nrt) of the turbo (not boost pressure!) really pushes that 10psi limit of the cap.

The black cap on my car has been there for over ten years and 125+K miles. Is it obvious when they go bad? I've never even thought about it.

I switched from green (though more water and crap than antifreeze) coolant to the orange Dexcool. I'll be sure to let you know if the cap goes south. Of course, at this point I can't blame any part of that car for failing...

Yeah they won't even seal anymore and spew easily...and a new cap doesn't spew. I suppose you could put the old gauged pressure pump in line and see if she (the cap) spurts forth under 10psi.

I would bet that my cap would blow out under less than 10psi, since I barely tighten the cap. I never seem to have any cooling related problems, though (although it's rarely above 90 degrees out here).

Weird, I've never had to replace one of them. Maybe it's the newer ones that deteriorate faster.

Extended life coolant has nothing to do with it.

I always put them on just barely enough so they seal.

I didn't really think the orange coolant killed them but....

Anyhow, when I mentioned the reason I needed a new one to the dude at IPD he did say something like: the rubber in the seal just isn't has hardy anymore...

That's good to know. I've just never heard of the extended life red coolant doing damage, and I know that I haven't experienced anything over a ton of miles with the stuff.

Over 230k miles and 9 years on the same cap for me (using the dexcool stuff for about 100k miles). I guess I should splurge and get a new one.
