m47 g'box, slightly worn....i think.....gonna change the oil....to what?? 700 1988

Hey all,

I have an m47 and it's starting to "whirr" a little in third. Well, actually, i think it oil is in dire need of a change....when i got the car (20,000k's ago) i could hear 3rd gear *slightly* whirr.....now i hear 2nd and 1st slightly whirr when *just* keeping the car accelerating, and 5th when i am doing 100kmh (again, only slightly). I am worried, for obvious reasons.... I just had a new clutch etc put in, and it seems to be worse after that (i didn't hear it a month ago). My centre bearing and engine mounts need to be replaced, could that affect it at all? I am looking at changing the oil with Mobil 1 10-30w synthetic....smart moooove?? I hope so, because it sounds like a good idea! Thanks for any help with this!

Az

P.S. If i need a new transmission, does the m46 use (or fit) the same clutch and flywheel as the m47???

    Re: m47 (long response) 700 1988

It isn't unusual for the M47 to make gear noise, which can change as the gears wear.

But if you're getting a high pitched whine when you're going around 100kmh, that's a different story, and it will be related to 1,2,and 3 making similar but lower pitched noises when accelerating.

I've played with M47 transmissions and their fluids a LOT.

Personally, I think that 10w30 is miserable for the M47. You'll bang gears and have trouble getting synchros to engage. A few people have had luck with that fluid, but I have never found it to be worth a dime.

If anything, Redline MTL is a great choice. Since you have noise coming from the box already, put it in (yes, overfill it) and change it every 20,000 miles. For $10US a quart, you can't argue with that kind of preventative maintenance.

Synthetic might accentuate leaks, however. Type F trans fluid won't leak much, but the synth might show up more. Common spots are the output shaft and the gear selector seal. THe input shaft isn't usually as bad of a leaker because it's aligned via the clutch and pilot bearing and doesn't work the seal as hard.

If not, change the transmission fluid to Type F, and then change every 10-15k. It is SO easy to change, there's no reason not to. Personally Type F seems to shift just fine. Again, I've changed and experimented with almost every acceptable lube available. Currently my newest M47 (that I just replaced) has Type F. The 10w30 didn't cut it there either.

One last thing. The 5-speed box seems to dislike being removed and reinstalled. I don't know why, I just know that.

Finally, an M46 will need a different clutch. I'm not even sure if the flywheel is the same for the M46 either, but that's just a "what if".

Re: same clutch and flywheel... 700 1988

I have swapped an 87 740T from the original M46 to an M47 without changing the flywheel OR the clutch.

I think the number of teeth on the tranny input shaft may differ from the number on an older (early 80's 240) steel M46, but is the same as a later aluminum one.

Well, yes, you can actually fit a Mazda clutch in there too. Not that you'd want to.

I'm just stating that the parts listed are different for the B230F with M46, and the B230F with M47. I don't know why that is. Also there is a differentiation between certain 700 years' clutch kits as far as I can tell from some parts lists that I had lying around.

So yes, you can probably put almost anything in there. I always figure that there must be some reason that they list different parts.

The input shaft should fit since 79, I think.

    Re: m47 g'box, slightly worn....i think.....gonna change the oil....to what?? 700 1988

Aaron -- I've heard people say good things about Redline MTL. I put it into my ancient M46 before it died, and it quieted things down quite a bit. I've heard people say that synthetics aren't the best in M46 due to seals degrading.

However, when I bought my first M47 last fall, the first thing I did was change out the trans fluid and replace it with Redline MTL. But here's the trick -- jack up (jack stands, please!) the driver's side when you put the new oil in so you can get the full 2 quarts in. This 'overfills' the trans case and ensures that all shafts are lubricated adequately. The urban legend is that the fill hole was bored too low with respect to the upper shaft, so the upper shaft stays drier than it should be if the trans case is filled with the car level.

My M47 is as silent as a tomb. It may be 'too late' for yours, but you've got nothing to lose by trying to overfill with a synthetic, and it may postpone the inevitable for 2-4 years.

thats something i was worried about, the g'box seals.......if it's had atf in it its whole life, and i convert to synthetic, will all the seals leak like crazy? i hope not!!!

2-4 year will definately do me out, as eventually (within 3 years) i'll be replacing the engine and g'box (turbo engine, modified, nothing wrong with the current one though!!)....

      THanks,

      Az
