Strange "Bulb Out" Indicator Problem 900 1993

I've looked at some of the old posts on similar problems, but mine has a unique twist. The "bulb out" indicator light comes on and off intermittently, with no apparent relationship to bumps, temperature, etc. Once it comes on, it will stay on for maybe a minute or two unless - and here's the strange part - unless I step on the brake pedal. As soon as I do that, the indicator lamp goes out. I can also get it to go out by turning on the rear fog light (just another way of getting one of the brake lights to go on, I suspect). So why would turning on the brake lights somehow cause the "bulb out" indicator light to go out?

I suspect a weak bulb fillament...the heat/current of the brake light (brighter element in the same bulb) creates a better contact much like a cracked solder joint...follow the Brit's advice and replace both bulbs with steel case(silver not copper) from the same manufacturer.

Re: Strange "Bulb Out" Indicator Problem 900 1993

    Hi Steve,

I had just this in my 245. The lamp would intermittently illuminate and would go out always when I braked. This was solved by replacing BOTH stop/tail bulbs with new items from the same manufacturer.

Different makes and age of bulb can draw different currents and the warning sytem is sensitive enough to detect this.

When checking this through bear in mind the words of a wise man called Zee - "Intermittent = Mechanical". It could be that something is physically awry, a broken wire, dodgy earth point etc.

Footnote - Some time after this the lamp came on continuously for no obvious reason so I removed the bulb (a delicious irony in a bulb failure warning system) and check all lights each weekend when I clean him.

    Rich.
