sporatic fuel supply, pumps and wiring 200 82

I bought this 82 at an auction. The main fuel pump wasn't getting power and the injectors were plugged up. Bought a new relay, just incase, played with the wiring, got it running fine. One day, say 150 miles later, we went to town, shut it off and it would not restart. Pull one injector to see if it was getting fuel, it sprayed, and wanted to start. Plugged the injector back in and it ran fine. Next day or so, went to town, stopped at a stop sign, it died. Would not restart. The injector was not spraying. No power to the pump. Yellow and red lines to both pumps. Except to the fuse box. There it is red coming in on the main and if you go out from there directly to the pump it comes on without the key. So we hooked it up to something else, both pumps run. (Looks like a new main pump)Still, barely fuel to injectors. (Note: cold start was particially plugged, which made us wonder about contaminates)When it runs, it runs good. (except initial start up). Non-electronic fuel injection. Fuel filter?

try a fuel pump check valve.

Re: sporatic fuel supply, pumps and wiring 200 82

"Fuel filter?"

Probably not. They tend to first reveal problems at high demand, which means high speed 'n heavy throttle. As the filter plugs more, the problem occurs increasingly at lower 'n lower speeds.

I'd think more of the fuel pressure regulator (I do NOT mean the control pressure regulator.) Unfortunately, the fuel pressure regulator is tucked into the back corner of the fuel distributor, which itself is crammed under the intake manifold. All-in-all, everything's buried. It's a solid day's work, or more. And risky. And a royal pita.

You have a slight chance it's a plugged fuel return line to the tank.

Ironically, with K-jet, if the fuel pressure climbs, it leans out the mixture. As the pressure climbs (which can happen if the pressure regulator is blocked) it prevents the sensor plate from rising, which means the injectors get less or no fuel.

Re: sporatic fuel supply, pumps and wiring 200 82

OK, before I tear into that can of worms, I am thinking about having the injectors flushed out, or maybe...is there a way to have the whole fuel system flushed? When we got it, a few months ago, the injectors were plugged up. We cleared them and it ran fine. Now, depending on the wiring mess, they spray, or don't spray, or spit. It appears also to be an old problem, one that might have gotten it sent to the auction. (Appears to have a new pump.)If there was a contamination problem, where is it most likely to come from? Could we be looking at a tank to injector total clean out? Could depris ruin the fuel distributor? (Which I saw could be $950?)I am headed to the big city to find a manual...any suggestions for the most detailed? Molly

"Could we be looking at a tank to injector total clean out?"

Could be.

"Could depris ruin the fuel distributor?"

Not ruin it, but ceratinly cause havoc with the high-precision internals, such as the pressure regulator. This caused the demise of my bomber rustbucket '82. Ran great one instant, then stalled and wouldn't restart. If I blow high pressure air into the fuel return line towards the distributor (fuel pres regulator), it will start and run for 5 seconds to 5 minutes, then stumble and quit.

When I measured the fuel pressure (using the Volvo gauge) it was pegged high.

"...headed to the big city to find a manual...any suggestions for the most detailed?"

From best to worst:

Volvo "green" manual.

Bentley.

Haynes.

Chiltons.

In fact, take the Chilton's to the bathroom. The pages are cheap, soft paper and have a prime use -- certainly not as sources of useful info.

When I diagnosed my '82 K-jet problem, I used the Volvo manuals.

Be aware also that a bad connection at the "frequency valve" or its relay can cause very poor running. I had this problem also on my '82, but have forgotten the symptom at idle. It ran like total crap at 80 'til I fixed the corroded connector.
