Fuel pump replacement 700 1988

I am planning to replace the main fuel pump on my 88 740. It looks like one end is a hose clamp fitting and the other a screw on flare type fitting which will require two wrenches (one holding the fitting on the pump and the other to undo and then reattach the pipe fitting). Is this correct? If not, what am I facing. Any tips, suggestions, other parts I may need. Is it necessary to worry about stopping the fuel flow (like you do on a 140 or 164 fuel injection model). All suggestions cheerfully accepted. Thanks

    Ira,

I'm sure that you already know that there are 2 fuel pumps in your car...one is in the tank and it we sell it for $49.00 (BRAND NEW OEM) and the other pump is the main pump which is made by BOSCH, we sell that one BRAND NEW for $115.00. I would probably double check to make sure that the main pump is the bad one, a lot of the time it is the in-tank pump.

    Good luck.

    Ira:

Sounds as though you have got the main idea. My only suggestion would be to remove the fuel pump/filter assembly from the car and finish the replacement procedure on a work bench. Be sure you use two flare nut wrenchs (if at all possible) to prevent rounding off the fittings (big bummer). Based on my experience with the main fuel pump and nearby filter, you do not have to stop fuel pump flow. Just have a cloth or container handy to catch what drips out when you start removing parts. Oh yeah! Make sure the key is off and maybe disconnect the battery.

Hope this helps and good luck.
