vibration when braking 900 1994

The FAQ has this "Drive the car- it should have no shake at all in the wheel when braking. Front rotors can warp, and they're over $100 each to replace." So my question is, if I replace the rotors, will this fix the problem? Next question, my mechanic said it is normal that the a/c cuts out slightly when accelerating hard because you need the power for acceleration. Who's right?

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

99% certain that new rotors will cure your probs. Always replace the pads when fitting new discs. If you don't use OE then use the best aftermarket kit you can afford. Don't fanny about getting the old ones skimmed - I can practically guarantee your judder will be back like an angry juddering thing. Rich.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

Yes, new rotors will likely cure your vibration. Just to be sure, have the front suspension checked out thoroughly for worn bushings, ball joints, etc and get any findings there put right, too. None of this work is hugely expensive on a 940. A good mechanic will not put on the wheel lug nuts so tight that the rotor will be prone to warping, but it does happen.

BUT, the vibration will come right back if the pins that the calipers slide on (an upper and lower on each side) are sticky or siezed. I learned the hard way with our '94 940 that these must be kept lubed or braking will be compromised and the rotors will warp due to brake drag. A good mechanic should not replace your rotors without checking these sliders and servicing them if needed.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

Jessica,

Okay, here is the deal. Most likely you have a warp in your rotors but the cost is far cheaper then what you were quoted. We sell the brand new original brake rotors for $39.00 each. The set of brand new original brake pads are $32.00. Now, here is the deal...you should have your mechanic check the ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings, wheel bearings and calipers before quesstamating that it is a warp that is the cause of the vibration. Also, your mechanic should always hand torque the wheel lug bolts to a specified pound. If he tightened the lug bolts with an air gun, he might have over tightened which may cause a vibration at about 60mph.

Yves, I checked out your Websight, I see Japan in there.

You know anybody selling OEM Outboard Motor parts.

Geeez I'm running out of children to sell so I can buy Yamaha parts at list price.

Re: vibration when braking 200 1991

Test your mechanic's theory out: cut off the AC, drive a few blocks, turn into an empty parking lot and try to stop/go/stop a few times. Next, turn the AC back on, drive around a bit, then try to stop/go/stop again.

If the shuddering happens ONLY with the AC on, then the mechanic may be right. If your car shudders and you feel the brake pedal "pulsating" at all times, then it has nothing to do with your AC. You might want to go to a Volvo specialist, or at least a brake specialist for a second opinion. They need to be sure it's your rotors and not the ABS system.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

Jessica, replacing the rotors & pads will likely solve the problem of vibration when braking. If front suspension components are really worn that might contribute to the vibration also but it's probably the rotors.

I have had a couple of Volvo's that had the a/c cut out, or air flow reduced when the engine is under higher load (accellerating, climbing steep grades). I believe it's because the vaccuum load changes and less air is flowing through the vaccuum lines to the a/c components due to engine demands. I heard it is normal.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

I have a 94 940 turbo with the same air conditioning situation. I figure this is normal like some others have already said. I know it is designed into other cars that way.

Also my brakes feel a little funny too. They seem to pulsate. I feel it in the pedal. Nothing in the wheel. My rotors were just turned. It almost feels like the ABS is turning on prematurely. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

Hi Dave. you'll know if your ABS is cutting in because you would hear a loud 'dagga dagga dagga' type noise which is quite alarming the first time you experience it. Rich.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

I have a 92 960, and when I bought the car the air never went off when I accelerated, but the air shuts off now when I accelerate. The problem is due to vacuum pod diaphragm is defective and it is very expensive to fix at a dealer. Best offer I got was about $350 per pod(not at a dealer). There is posting I believe on FAQ that shows how to do this repair. In my 82 the vents never shut off when I accelerate.

Re: vibration when braking 900 1994

A Brick mechanic, (former neighbor), warned me that the Volvo rotors are susceptible to warpage especially if they are hot and hit with water, such as car washes, front yard car washes. It makes sense to let the breaks cool down a little.
