a whole lotta oil loss 700 89

Im pretty sure I have a oil leak, main reason for me coming to this conclusion is cuz I have a bunch of oil all underneath my car, I lost 1 quart of oil in about the last 2-3 weeks, my rear wagon door has oil on it, and the driveway is has oil drip marks. I think its comming from the turbo return line cuz thats where there seems to be a lot of oil. Does it usually spray out oil that hard to get it all over the rear of the car? I dont see any smoke while driving tho. I checked it today and it doesnt seem to be loose so maybe its a seal? am I right? or could it be something else? if its the seal to the return line, how do I fix it?

Also, while trying to troubleshoot it, I heard something that if u unscrew ur oil filler cap while ur engine is at idle and while its sitting there it rattles, that means u have too much positive pressure. How do u fix that? could that be why Im loosing oil? thanx in advanced

Yes, the turbo oil drain tube can leak. I even found a crack in one which was leaking. They geneerally do not leak oil from the block end unless the o-ring has been damaged. Check the breather system as the previous post recommends.

Turbo cars often leak oil from the block o-ring underneath the oil cooler adapter. Your car is old enough to have this leak.

The distributor shaft seal also fails with age and is likely to leak plenty. There is lots on replacing the distributor shaft seal in the 700/900 FAQ.

Excessive crankcase pressure can definitely cause an oil leak. It can not only force oil past seals, but it can pop seals entirely out of the engine. Go to the 700/900 FAQ and look around. There's lots of info that pertains to your situation. I'd rather not try to give you direct advice myself because I don't have a turbo and I'm not sure if the way I would treat the problem on my car would necessarily be correct for you. Good luck.

    Tim

I concur with the posts from Tim Smith and John Sargent. I recently fixed the same problem on my '89 turbo, and you need to make sure the crankcase pressure system is clean and in good working order.

After doing that, I replaced the gaskets on the oil return line (an "eye" shaped one at the bottom of the turbo and an o-ring on the engine block) and that slowed the leak, but didn't completely end it. I then replaced all the o-rings on the oil filter adapter and that stopped the leak. My driveway is now clean. Oil coming out of the adapter gets blown around the right side of the engine bay and down the bottom of the car, so it can be difficult to isolate and fix. I bought the o-rings and gaskets from a local Volvo dealer, and they were kind enough to copy a couple of pages from their service manuals to make the job easier.
