yellow lenses??? read this.... 200 '88

my headlight lenses have been yellow for some time and i refuse to pay the outragious price of clear ones. saturday, i took ultra fine wet/dry sandpaper, blue magic metal polish and my high-speed buffer to them. after about 30 minutes total, they look practically brand new. sand off the yellow layer until you see white powder, wipe with a cloth, rub the blue magic on heavy and buff it off and then to a high shine. do this as many times as needed for desired look. CAUTION: keep the buffer head at least moist and moving so you don't burn, metl or scortch the lense (if you do, sand it down and start over.) it will amaze you at the results.

The three bumps are for indexing an old style Volvo Alignment tool used to aim the headlights. A safety thing, they used to do it at every service.

What grit of sandpaper did your use?

Did you sand them by hand, or orbital buffer?

i used a VERY fine automotive wet/dry paper (the info i read said 1000grit, i just had some extra fine stuff sitting around and used that.) use it dry first, wipe the dust, use it with the blue magic (in using this stuff, i'v used Brasso before and it has the same smell and effest as the blue magic), wipe and then buff.

      good luck.

Is this necessary only on the exterior of the lens?

I have a 89 240 wagon with the "bug eye" lens. I sure do miss my 82 240 with the 4 rectangle headlights. They were much better than these.

as far as i know yes. there is the possibility that the inside could yellow but i didn't notice it on mine. i have a 1/3hp buffer and it works fine for everything i need. i will caution you to not hit the three bumps (have no clue what the purpose is) and keep the buffer pad moist. if you can get your covers off without problem, you might want to and clean the inside of them just to remove the dirt. it couldn't hurt.

      good luck.

I don't know what the light housing looks like, but I heard that for Altimas, to get the yellowing from the inside, you bake the housing at 300degrees F for 15 min. The seal melts slightly. Open it up, clean/buff/whatevers, then reseal it.

On a side note...My volvo will be sold soon...bro is letting me use his 93 Maxima 5sp until I get a 95 or 97 Maxima 5sp. I'm gonna miss rwd...fwd just isn't as fun.

        Jay

That's what I did and it works great. But recognize that in so doing you remove the scratch-resistant layer on the surface of the plastic. To reduce "sandblasting" and keep them from further UV degradation, get some lens protection film from IPD (Headlamp Saver?) and apply it. Costs about $15 and works. The expensive alternative is Stongard, around $60.
