W,S,E Trans mode flashing 900 1993

The trans indicator lights for Winter, Sport, Economy (down by the shifter) flash and the car's power is cut to 1/4th. Also the shift arrow on the dash blinks on and off quickly. It has happened twice in 1 month, both on cold days (20 degrees F) Dealer stated to turn car off and on a few times and symptom should go away for now - he stated its a wiring problem and costs $300 to fix, which if far too much $$$ for my 100,000 mile 960 Wagon.     I had to replace my PNP or PNK switch (something like that) to cure those same syptoms. I think it sense the gear shift position for the transmission. I thought there was a code stored for that also. It cost about 300 buck part and labor.

      Same thing, WSE flashing = no acceleration.

      Also limping home is never fun,

      I shelled out 300 bucks to the dealer and the problem went away. They at the same time did some VOLVO TSB's for an AC switch at the same time. Got a nice new S70 to drive for 3 days. It was cheaper than being T boned when pulling out into traffic.

    The same thing has been going on on my car (94 960 107,000mi) for about 4 months. It is true that if you turn the car on and off a few times it kicks back into regular drive mode. What I do is shut the car off, press the W firmly, then press the S then the E, It usually starts in the right mode. My independent mechanic told me it would be $250 to fix, and the problem is probably not going to go away only get worse. Mine is to the point of doing it every other day.

    You need to read the stored codes. There is a description of the procedure in the 700/900 FAQ. Use the features pull down menu to get there. Look for the section on automatic trnsmissions.
