automatic transmission aw71 loses traction in a 940T 900 1991

Hello:

I would thank for aid because in Spain there are not many automatic cars. My mechanical factory has given back the car to me saying that there is to change the entire transmission; it only has 74,000 miles, and I cannot believe it. Problem: In the beginning, after starting, everything goes well, the transmission shifts, but in the little short while, suddenly, the transmission becomes disconnected, losing traction; moving, I accelerate and the motor takes very much revolutions but the car does not obey and don´t shift up nor down, like it would be in neutral. I must stop the motor, wait a moment and repeat the operation. With the problem, if I accelerate in neutral it hears a slight buzzing noise of gears behind the motor like "the transmission has not enlisted". The oil is new. I revised the kickdown cable. Are OBC fault codes for tranny in a 940?

I apologize my english, any insight would be greatly appreciated

PD. To steve and Martin T : I thanks your messages a month ago, you see that the technician I went here didn't repair the trans.

Abe's advice is always right on. This is an easy fix if his diagnosis is correct: drop the pan, clean the pan and the strainer, and reinstall using a new gasket. Refill and see what happens. If there was a great deal of crud on the strainer and in the pan, then you may want to have the transmission flushed through the coolant lines (see the FAQ for instructions as to how to do it.)

Let us know how this problem is solved.

There are no fault codes on that transmission as it is not electronically controlled.

The things you list sound like a stopped up filter inside transmission pan.

Did the pan get removed and the filter inspected?

The filter is a fine metal mesh strainer and can be cleaned in most cases. I didn't read your previous post of a month ago so I do not know how this started but using shop clothes to wipe off things inside transmission or to wipe the pan when it is off, can introduce lint that the transmission filter will catch when it is running. The debris on filter then starves the transmission pump for oil. The transmission pump will whine when it operating with excessive vacuum on its inlet due to a plugged filter.

When you stop and shut down engine, the lint falls off the filter and it will work again for a period of time until the lint is sucked up onto filter once again.
