Dead AW71 resurrected! Yee Hah!! 700 87

Last week I posted a question about my hard shifting AW71 Automatic Tranny. I thoght it was dead.

However, Kerry Schutt, (may he live a long and healthy life) gave me a site to look at that saved my butt. He told me of his woes and gave the cure.

I tore apart my entire Valve body (With manual borrowed from Volvo of London) cleaned it found the small and worn valve ball, replaced it reassembled and hey presto!! a great shifting fresh feeling tranny. total cost? 65 bucks. Estimate from dealer? 2000 or more. They've never opened the manual they lent me. They always replace the whole unit. Great care needs to be taken upon disassembly however its an easy job.

Thanks Kerry.

Herman, great work on a real "ballsy" project. I agree: the manual is absolutely indispensable. And not too expensive either, especially given the quality of the illustrations and the troubleshooting guides. But one question: when you pulled the valve body, did the accumulator pistons pop out? The manual shows a retainer tool (a small metal plate) that holds the pistons in place. Without this, did you have a problem? Do things really fly all over, or can you maneuver this baby over to your bench without a trail of parts?

Steve your signature included something to the effect of never wanting to take your tranny apart. In retrospect it wasn't that bad. The valve body comes out as an entire unit. It hangs off the kickdown cable and drains giving you time to see if the accumulator pistons will fall or not (mine stayed in place for two days). All the delicate work happens on your bench.

      No sweat no flying bits.
