Help me O lord, before I baseball bat may car! 200 1986

Hi guys. I'm grovelling for advice again. My clock and rev counter do not intermittently work, but the clock comes back to life when the ignition is switched off, and the problem is becoming more frequent. I know it isn't the end of the world but every time I sit in Bjorns (for 'tis his name) drivers seat I have to look directly at a knackered clock and tacho, and the clock coming back on when I end my journey is one Mickey take too far... All advice greatfully received as I'm not too clever wih the electrics - give me a layshaft bearing replacement any day! Thanks in advance...

Sounds like the instrument cluster has lost its ground, or that its ground connection is poor. Whenever the car is off, clock ground is achieved through all the other electrical paths. But when the cluster is on, everything is at 12 volts, so there is no "sneak" path to ground.

First thing I'd do is remove the cluster, tighten all the nuts, screws, and connections. Then I'd resolder the PC board. Finally, I'd check the female connectors in the big plugs.

You said it's "intermittent" -- this is a code word for "mechanical" (i.e., things sometimes touching, sometimes not touching).

A good point well made about the potential mechanical aspect of my problem. I've got a long weekend coming up so, weather permitting, i'll have a look along the lines you suggest. Many, many, thanks. P.S. Long weekend = code word for playing with my Swedish Brick. Can't wait!

You're spot on. I have a 245 and a wife. The 245 is better looking, cheaper to run, more comfortable, more reliable and a better friend. There is only one thing the Wife manages better. Yep, you guessed it........cooking! But only just.

Well, you can always wrap your food up in aluminum foil, place it over the engine and go for a drive. Later, you would have the best of both worlds.
