I have been advised by my mechanic that the speed sensor on my 240 (B230 Engine) is going, or is bad. The car will intermittantly not immediatly restart when warm. As I understand it, this sensor is a magnetic pick up located on top of the bell housing and plugs into the computer. Are these difficult to change? Are they servicable? Can they be changed working from above or is a lift needed? Is there calibration needed or are these a fixed mount? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

The symptoms you describe are consistant with others' experiences, including my own. If you open the hood, stand by the right wheel, and poke your head down toward the rear of the engine, you'll see the sensor on the bell housing. It's at about 11:00 on the bell housing, when looking toward the rear of the car. I think there is a small (about 10 mm) screw retaining it into the bell housing. It should be a simple remove-and-replace operation.

I had mine replaced a few years back by my mechanic, before I became so dog-gone "Brickboard educated". As I recall, the part was around $55 and the labor was way too much for the ten minutes or so that it takes to replace it.
