fuel pressure regulator replacement 200 88

You know since my car is sputter/coughing I might as well change the fuel pressure regulator.I mean hell I ve already spent alot of money. A fifty dollar fpr is not going to hurt. How do I check for a faulty fpr? I know where it is located in my wagon.( I think it is located right behind or beside the timing belt.)Correct me if I am wrong. The question is how hard is it to remove the fpr? There is a connection in the front of the fpr but what about the hoses? In my car the hoses have little clamps on it but there are facing towards the firewall. Is it easier to get to from the under the car or on top? In the next few days I will be switching AMM with my girlfriend's car to seeif mine is bad.I will also be checking my wiring harness for any shorts so Imight as well check the fuel pressure regulator too. Any other things I should be paying attentionto?

Thanks everyone for you help.

twist it off, slowly. When reinstalling a new one, use a drop of engine oil on the rubber seal to guide it in.

The fpr is on the front of the injector rail. Remove the vacuum hose. Loosen the clamp from the retorn line on the back side of fpr. If clamp screw is not accessible, try twisting the hose till you can reach the screw. Now remove the two screws that mount the fpr to the manifold. (10mm) pull the regulator off of the manifold and out of the fuel rail, remove the return line. Whole job should take 5 minutes.

Re: fuel pressure regulator replacement 200 88

The fuel will be under pressure so have some rags ready to catch the gas and don't have any flames or cigarettes around when doing this job. If you have a hand vacuum pump, you can bleed off the pressure by connecting it where the manifold vacuum pump goes on the regulator and applying a vacuum. This also helps when replacing the fuel filter.

Re: fuel pressure regulator replacement 200 88

A pressure gauge installed on the fuel rail is the best way to check regulator. As long as your not sure this is your problem you may want to try one from the junk yard. Find a pick-n-pull as they are the cheapest and you get the advantage of being able to "practice" parts removal on a junk car before you work on your good car. Try and determine how a given car ended up in the junk yard. In other words a clean looking car with massive body damage would be a better car to pull parts from than a car with no visible damage. You know a wrecked car was probably running when it was wrecked. A clean wrecked car was probably running good. I would expect to pay $2.00 to $5.00 at the junk yard and on a good day they may give it to me for free.

How do you loosen the large nut which holds the regulator onto its mounting bracket?

Ihave tried several in the junkyard and all I manage to do is bend the brakcet.
